MG Motor India is set to launch the 50 kWh version of the Windsor EV in India, in the coming week. It will be called the Windsor EV Pro when launched. The manufacturer has lately been releasing teasers and revealing details of the EV. The latest of these confirms the Windsor Pro to come with a feature that was originally made famous by the Tata Curvv. EV- Vehicle To Load (V2L) charging.

The newest teaser shared by MG confirms the v2L feature to make an appearance on the new Windsor. It shows a Windsor Pro powering a series of electronic devices at what looks like a campsite. The on-screen text reads 'You may now use your electronic devices anywhere. Introducing Vehicle-to-Load charging.'

What Is V2L Charging?

Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) allows you to use your electric vehicle (EV) to power external devices, appliances and even other electric vehicles. The power from the EV battery is processed and supplied to these devices. The vehicle then functions like a mobile power source!

The process isn't as simple as it might sound to be. EV batteries store energy as direct current (DC). Most home appliances and power tools ( the 'load' in this case) operate on Alternating Current (AC). To realise V2L, the first and most important thing is to get the DC-to-AC conversion right.

In V2L-enabled vehicles, the 'load' devices are plugged into a dedicated port, located either on the exterior or inside the cabin. These EVs use an onboard converter to transform the battery's DC current into AC waves. This is then made available through a standard AC outlet (most vehicles feature a three-prong socket which can suit most appliances and devices).

While use cases like 'powering the entirety of a (micro) campsite or rejuicing the battery of another EV could sound like those which you can do, but would rarely do, those like powering an electric kettle on a road trip would be much more practical and desirable.

Tata Curvv.EV Already Has It!

When Tata Motors launched the Curvv. EV in August 2024, V2L was one of its biggest talking points. Even the Nexon EV has this technology. The Curvv.EV has been selling healthy numbers, eventually leading to more people talking about the tech and its practical implications.

The Windsor EV getting it will only make V2L more popular among Indian EV buyers. Reason? Well, MG Windsor rose to instant acceptance and has been contributing significantly to MG's monthly volumes. The 'PRO' version could hardly fail to impress!

Other Features On Windsor EV Pro

In addition to V2L, the Windsor EV Pro is also expected to come with features and technology like a 15.6-inch digital instrument gauge cluster, 8.8-inch digital instrument gauge cluster, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a wireless charger, 9-speaker Infinity sound system, automatic climate control, cruise control, panoramic glass roof, and 135-degree reclining rear seats. Many of these can be seen in the outgoing Windsor as well.

A key differentiating feature between the PRO and the regular Windsor will, however, be the way the cabin's look and feel differs between the two. Unlike the regular Windsor's clean, plain, dark-themed cabin, the Windsor PRO will have faux wood trims inside. These can be seen on the centre console and the dashboard- as seen in the teasers. The cabin will have several Copper accents as well.

The biggest highlight of the Windsor Pro will be its larger battery pack. The regular Windsor comes with a 38 kWh battery pack that offers a range of 331 kilometres per charge. The PRO version will get a larger 50 kWh unit that is claimed to make this rise to 461 km per charge. This will significantly improve the vehicle's real world usability. Though not confirmed officially, the new Windsor could also come with a more powerful electric motor.
