The British carmaker JSW MG Motor India recently surprised everyone in the country with the launch of their third electric car, the MG Windsor EV, priced at Rs 9.99 lakh (under the battery subscription plan). Soon after the price announcement, many people wanted to compare the new Windsor EV with the popular Tata Nexon EV because of the price overlap. This, despite the Windsor being a much larger car. So, if you are also one of those electric vehicle enthusiasts who are confused between the two cars, then we have something for you. Here is a detailed comparison of the two EVs that will help in deciding which EV is for you.

MG Windsor EV vs. Tata Nexon EV Pricing

First off, let’s talk about the pricing of the MG Windsor EV and Tata Nexon EV. MG has priced the Windsor EV very competitively, with its price starting at Rs 9.99 lakh. Now, the catch with this price is that it only includes the car. For the battery, you have to pay Rs 3.5 per km to MG.

This unique program, which divides the car and battery, is called the Battery as a Service (BaaS) program. With this, buyers do not have to pay the cost of the battery upfront, which significantly reduces the price of the car. This Rs 9.99 lakh price, however, is for the base Excite variant.

Now, if you are someone who does not want to pay for the battery separately, you can pay Rs 13.5 lakh, Rs 14.5 lakh, and Rs 15.5 lakh for the Excite, Exclusive, and Essence variants, respectively.

As for the Tata Nexon EV, it starts at a higher price of Rs 12.49 lakh for the 35 kWh battery pack variants. Meanwhile, the bigger 40.5 kWh battery pack variants start at Rs 14.59 lakh. The company has also launched another bigger battery pack variant, the 45 kWh battery pack, which starts at Rs 13.99 lakh and goes all the way up to Rs 17.19 lakh for the Nexon EV Red Dark Edition.

Design and Dimensions

In terms of design, the Windsor EV gets an MPV body style but looks very modern and futuristic. It boasts the brand’s new Aeroglide design language. The front of the Windsor EV comes with a full-width LED light bar and sharp LED DRLs, along with sleek aero alloy wheels and flush door handles.

It also gets a sleek-looking set of LED taillights. In terms of dimensions, the MG Windsor measures 4,295 mm in length, 2,216 mm in width, and 1,677 mm in height. The Windsor EV also boasts a wheelbase of 2,700 mm.

On the other hand, the Tata Nexon EV offers an SUV body style, which looks a lot more aggressive. It gets sharper body lines and more aggressive design cues. The front gets a sleek connected LED DRL setup with LED headlights set in the lower bumper.

The side profile remains the same as the previous generation model but has been modernized with new 16-inch alloy wheels. As for the rear, it also continues the aggressive design language. In terms of dimensions, the Nexon EV measures 3,994 mm in length, 1,811 mm in width, and 1,616 mm in height. It also gets a wheelbase of 2,498 mm.

Now, in terms of comparison of size, the MG Windsor EV is a lot bigger than the Nexon EV. So, if space and size are what you are going after, then the Windsor EV should be your pick.

Interior Design and Features

Now, coming to interior design and space, the MG Windsor offers a very spacious cabin with plush materials. In terms of features, it gets a massive 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 135° reclining rear seats, and a panoramic glass roof.

It also comes with a 9-speaker Infinity music system, 256-color ambient lighting, a wireless charger, and other features. Additionally, the boot space in the Windsor is also significantly larger. It offers a massive boot capacity of 604 liters.

As for the Tata Nexon EV, it features a modern but slightly compact cabin. It is not as spacious as the Windsor EV, but it still offers a premium experience. In terms of features, it gets a 12.3-inch touchscreen, ventilated seats, a single-pane sunroof, and a 360-degree camera.

Now, comparing the boot space, it offers a much smaller 350-liter boot. Other features of the Nexon EV include wireless charging, connected car tech, and voice commands.

So, if you are someone who would like to have a car that is super spacious from the inside and like to be chauffeured around, then MG Windsor EV should be your go to option. However, if you can manage with a smaller cabin and like driving by yourself, you may opt for the Tata Nexon EV.

Battery Options and Range

Coming to the most important aspect of any electric vehicle, the battery pack and range. First off, we have the MG Windsor EV, which comes with a single 38 kWh battery pack. With this, it offers a range of 331 km on a single full charge.

On the other hand, the Tata Nexon EV comes with two battery pack options. The first is a 30.2 kWh variant, which offers a range of 325 km. Meanwhile, the other option is a bigger 40.5 kWh variant, which boasts a 465 km range.

Tata Motors has recently also launched another bigger battery pack option for the Nexon EV, which comes with a 45 kWh battery pack. With this, it offers a range of 489 km on a single full charge. It is believed that the real-world driving range of this variant will be around 350 to 379 km per full charge.

So, if you are looking for an EV that you can drive without any issue of range, then you have to opt for the Nexon EV. However, if you are okay with lower range (read you drive mostly within the city), you can then go with the MG Windsor EV.

Performance and Powertrain

In terms of the powertrain, the MG Windsor EV comes with 134 bhp of power and 200 Nm of torque. The MG Windsor EV can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in around 8.9 seconds. This is decently quick for a car this heavy.

Now, coming to the Tata Nexon EV, it is offered with two power outputs. The standard Medium Range variant generates 127 bhp and 215 Nm of torque. On the other hand, the Long-Range version delivers 143 bhp with the same torque. It has a slightly quicker acceleration of 0 to 100 kmph in 8.6 seconds.

So, if performance is what you are looking for, then you can opt for the Tata Nexon EV. The MG Windsor EV is for those who prefer a relaxed drive in supreme comfort.

Which One Should You Buy?

MG Windsor

Now, coming to the main question of who should buy which car. Well, the answer to this is that the MG Windsor is ideal for buyers who are looking for a more luxurious, spacious, and tech-loaded EV. It will be perfect for those who like to be driven around by chauffeurs. So, if you see yourself more in the rear seat, then you should opt for the MG Windsor EV.

Tata Nexon EV

Meanwhile, if you are someone who wants to have the fun of driving, then the Tata Nexon EV is better suited for you. This electric SUV also offers you a longer range, especially with its new 45 kWh battery pack variant. So, it is perfect for individuals or families looking for a reliable, all-rounder EV that can be driven around the city as well as cover small road trips.
