MG Windsor Pro vs Vinfast VF6: How Do They Compare?

Mid-size and compact electric SUVs are in good demand. The sub-20 lakh EV segment packs much value and now has a lot of competition. The MG Windsor currently dominates the segment with its capable powertrain, good range figures, and appealing value proposition. The Vietnamese carmaker Vinfast recently announced its entry into the Indian market with two models- the VF6 and VF7. The VF6 has been priced well and will be able to put up a strong fight against the Windsor Pro. Let’s now pit these against each other to see how they compare on various fronts like design, features, and specifications..
Styling is always subjective. The Windsor Pro’s design lacks drama. It looks good and practical. Key highlights of the design are the dual-tone paint scheme and the flush-type door handles.
The VF6, on the other hand, has a more stylish look. It has been designed by Italy’s Torino Design house. It, however, comes with regular door handles. The design at large remains modern yet balanced. Also, the paint options on the VF6 are all mono-tones. It is available in six colour options.
The cabin layout and equipment array differ sharply between these models. Unlike the regular Windsor EV that comes with a dark-themed cabin, the Pro gets a more pleasant dual-tone Ivory colour scheme. The VF6, on the other hand, has a dual-tone Black-Tan colour scheme and leatherette upholstery that feels plush.
The cabin designs on both these vehicles may look minimalist and practical. The dashboard design of the VF6 is very clean. You will see just a few buttons and a large central screen on it. The air-con vents have been integrated well into the design. The buttons, again, are for gear (drive mode) selection, and are not infotainment controls.
Most controls have been integrated into the central screen. A similar setup can be seen on the Windsor Pro as well. The VF6 gets a three-spoke steering wheel while the Windsor Pro has a two-spoke unit.
Talking of equipment, both EVs come well-kitted. The Windsor Pro gets a large fixed glass roof, auto headlamps, eight-way powered driver seat, eight-speaker audio, auto AC, auto-dimming IRVM, connected car tech, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, level 2 ADAS, and front ventilated seats.
Almost all of the above can be found on the VF6 as well. On the safety front, however, the VF6 gets seven airbags, while the Windsor Pro has only six. In addition to this, you also get safety features like ABS and EBD as well. The VF6 also has an attractive Head Up Display (HUD).
A key difference is in the size of the infotainment screen. The VF6 features a 12.9 inch touchscreen, while a larger 15.6 inch unit is seen on the Windsor Pro- that’s larger than a laptop screen! The MG also gets V2L capability, which is missing on the Vinfast.
MG offers the Windsor in two forms- the standard EV and the Pro. The latter has a 52.9 kWH battery pack that uses Prismatic cells- a major step up from the regular EV’s 38 KWh unit. The electric motor on the Windsor produces 134bhp and 200Nm. The claimed range here, is 449 km per charge.
The VF6, on the other hand, comes with much better specifications. It has a large 59.6kWh battery pack that claims a range of 468km per charge- slightly more than that of the Windsor Pro. Owners will be able to do inter-city commutes with the VF6 comfortably. The electric motor on the Vinfast has an output of 210bhp and 310Nm torque- much more than the meek power and torque figures of the MG. The VF6 is claimed to be faster as well.
Both these electric vehicles have attractive positioning in the market. The Windsor EV Pro starts at Rs 17.24 lakh and go up to Rs 18.39 lakh, for the top variant. The on-road prices will stand below 20 lakh in most cities. The VF6 has been priced even more aggressively. It starts at Rs16.49 lakh and goes up to 18.29 lakh, ex-showroom. Vinfast’s local production strategies have helped them in pricing it so well.
Time remains before we can say which of these electric SUVs is a better buy. We haven’t been able to drive the VF6 yet. Also, MG’s widespread sales and service networks give the Windsor Pro a major upper hand, as far as ownership experience is concerned.
