FASTAG Rs. 3,000 Yearly Pass: All Your Questions Answered

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is all set to roll out a new mode of operation for the toll collection system in the country. A new 'Annual pass scheme' has been announced, scheduled to come into effect from the 15th of August 2025. The new move is expected to reduce travel costs dramatically for long-distance and frequent travellers. Due to its tech-driven nature, the public could have many questions and doubts about it. Minister Nitin Gadkari has now started answering some of these through his office's Twitter handle.

What is the FASTag Annual Pass ?

The Annual Pass allows free passege of qualified cars, SUV, vans and other private vehicles at National Highway (NH) and National Expressway (NE) toll plazas. It stands valid for one year or 200 trips. There will be no per-trip fee for users.

How can I activate the Annual Pass?

The FASTAG's annual pass scheme can be activated after verifying the eligibility of the applying vehicle. Once its FASTAG is verified successfully, the owner will have to pay Rs 3,000 through the Rajmargyatra mobile application or NHAI website. The Annual Pass will be activated once the payment is confirmed.

Where can I buy the Pass?

At present, you can only purchase the annual pass on the Rajmargyatra mobile application and NHAI's official website.

Can I buy it again after completing 200 trips, without having to wait for the year to get over?

Yes, re-purchase is possible once the 200-trip limit is reached, even if there is still time left for the validity period to be over.

Is the Annual Pass mandatory or can I opt out?

As of now, the Annual Pass isn't mandatory. Users can opt for it only if they are interested in the perks offered by the pass. The existing FASTag ecosystem will continue to operate normally

Is it available for all vehicle types?

The Annual Pass is available only for private vehicles. Cars, SUVs and vans- all stand a chance to qualify for it. Commercial vehicles (CV) do not qualify. The use of the pass on any CV will result in immediate suspension of it.

Which toll plazas are covered under the Annual Pass?

You will be able to use the Annual Pass only on National Highway (NH) and National Expressway (NE) toll plazas. It cannot be used on toll plazas operated by state governments or local bodies. There, you will have to use the regular FASTag ecosystem.

If I already have a FASTag, should I buy a new one to activate the pass?

No. The Annual Pass can be activated on the existing FASTag of the qualifying vehicle.

How do I know if my FASTag is eligible to get the Annual Pass activated?

The general criteria for a FASTag to be eligible for Annual Pass activation is as follows:

• It should be properly affixed on the vehicle's windshield.
• It should be linked to a valid vehicle registration number.
• It should not be blacklisted.

Can I get SMS notifications related to my Annual Pass on my mobile phone?

Yes. When activated, the Rajmargyatra app or NHAI website will retrieve the vehicle owner's registered mobile number from the the issuing bank, and send SMS alerts and related communications.

How is a 'single trip' calculated on the Annual Pass?

For point-based toll plazas, one crossing counts as one trip. A round trip is thus considered as 'two separate trips'. In the case of closed tolling, one entry and one exit is counted as a trip.

Can I get an Annual Pass if my FASTag is registered using a chassis number or if my vehicle doesn't have a registration number?

No. You will have to wait till the Vehicle Registration Number (VRN) is connected with the FASTag, to be eligible for the Pass.

Is the Annual Pass transferrable?

No, the Annual Pass cannot be transferred between vehicles. Any such practice will lead to its deactivation.
