Skoda-Volkswagen Race Past 2 Million Cars Produced In India

Skoda Auto Volkswagen India has crossed the two million vehicle production mark in its 25-year manufacturing journey. More than 500,000 of these are built on the India-developed MQB-A0-IN platform that underpins the Skoda Kushaq, Slavia, Kylaq and the Volkswagen Taigun and Virtus. The milestone comes during the group’s strongest commercial phase, with October 2025 being its best month since formation.
The last 500,000 vehicles took only about three and a half years to roll out, highlighting how production has accelerated in the recent phase. Earlier, both Skoda and Volkswagen struggled to gain scale because their cars were priced at a premium to mass market rivals. Locally engineered and localised products on MQB-A0-IN have narrowed that gap while retaining the feel buyers expect from the brands.
The MQB-A0-IN platform was designed by local engineering teams with three priorities in mind. It had to be cost competitive, robust enough for varied Indian road conditions and flexible enough to support multiple body styles and powertrains. That flexibility allowed Skoda and Volkswagen to quickly expand their portfolios into high volume segments that were previously under served by the group.
In 2025, Skoda Auto recorded its best ever performance over a ten month period, delivering 61,607 units, more than double its tally for the same period last year. The Kushaq compact SUV and Slavia midsize sedan have become the main volume drivers, while the Kylaq subcompact SUV is helping the brand tap the entry SUV space dominated by Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Tata Motors.
Volkswagen, meanwhile, posted its highest monthly sales for the Virtus during the Diwali period. Over the 40 months since launch, the midsize sedan has captured more than 40 percent share in the premium sedan segment. The Virtus competes with the Honda City, Hyundai Verna and Skoda Slavia, and differentiates itself with TSI turbo petrol engines and a focus on driving feel and build quality.
The broader product mix now leans heavily on SUVs, which mirrors market demand. With Kushaq, Kylaq and Taigun in Skoda and Volkswagen showrooms, the group has coverage across key SUV price bands, while the Virtus and Slavia continue to serve sedan buyers who still prefer a three box layout.
Out of the two million vehicles produced, more than 700,000 have been exported to markets in Latin America, Africa, Southeast Asia and the Middle East. This export volume turns India into a key manufacturing hub under the group’s "Made in India, Driven by the World" positioning. Higher exports improve plant utilisation and support more competitive domestic pricing.
The premium and luxury brands under the group have also added momentum. Bentley has placed sales, marketing and after sales operations under Bentley India, an operational division within Skoda Auto Volkswagen India, and opened new showrooms in Mumbai and Bengaluru. Porsche has added more than 4,400 customers in the last six years and now operates 13 sales points, showing steady demand for performance cars.
Audi has marked several milestones of its own. The RS Q8 won Performance Car of the Year at the 2025 AutoX Awards. The Audi Approved plus pre owned programme grew five percent between January and September 2025. Under Phase II of the Charge My Audi initiative, the brand has supported installation of more than 6,500 charging points to give its electric vehicle customers better access to public charging.
The landmark comes at a time when Indian buyers are clearly shifting towards SUVs, petrol powertrains and connected features. Skoda and Volkswagen are aligned with these trends through turbo petrol engines, SUV heavy lineups and connected tech such as digital cockpits, remote vehicle functions and over the air update capability.
The group’s October 2025 performance also benefited from GST rate reductions announced in September, which lowered prices for several models and pulled some demand forward. The challenge now will be to hold volumes once that one time boost fades. Future growth will require timely updates to MQB-A0-IN based models and clear plans for electrification, advanced driver assistance systems and next generation vehicle software, areas where competition is intensifying across the market.
