In the last one month, we have come across several videos where newly inaugurated roads have started showing quality issues. In many places, the concrete section of the road fell off, while in others, potholes started appearing on brand-new roads. A video posted by a social media user is now going viral, showing the tarmac on a newly constructed flyover in Mumbai coming off just within 24 hours of its inauguration.

The video has been shared by Jijo Yohannan on his Instagram page. In this video, the social media user shared the footage while driving his car through the same flyover within 24 hours of its inauguration. This is the Palava flyover in Kalyan, and in the video, we can clearly see that the top layer of the tarmac laid on the road has come off, affecting ride quality and creating issues for commuters.

The reason why the newly inaugurated flyover is in this condition will actually surprise you. Just like many construction and road projects in India, this flyover took around six years to be completed. The locals were happy as it would resolve the traffic issues in the area, but their happiness was short-lived.

The flyover was inaugurated on Friday last week, and on the very same day, it witnessed a couple of two-wheeler accidents. The two-wheeler riders alleged that the road surface had excess bitumen, which made their vehicles skid.

The newly constructed flyover, which took around six years to complete, was shut down within hours and was reopened only after repairs. The loose rocks or tarmac that we see in the video are probably due to the repair work carried out on the flyover.

Reports mention that gritting work was done on the road to ensure that the surface isn’t slippery. However, after the repair work was completed, it doesn’t look like the company that carried out the work actually cared to clean the road. The road is still unsafe for two-wheeler riders, as it is easy for them to skid over these loose rocks.

The social media user who posted this video raises concerns about the road quality and mentions that this happened just within 24 hours of its inauguration. He is worried about how the road would look in just one year.

The closure of the road triggered Sena (UBT)'s Kalyan district president, Dipesh Mhatre, who said that the flyover was opened in a hurry and the work was incomplete. He also demanded police action against those responsible for the accident on the flyover after its inauguration. Former MNS MLA Pramod Patil also claimed that substandard material had been used for the construction and sought an audit.

The Palava flyover was built to ease traffic between Dombivli, Kalyan, and Navi Mumbai. We have come across several videos shared by news channels and common people showing quality issues in newly built or inaugurated roads.

Recently, we came across a video where a concrete slab of the 3-day-old Samruddhi Expressway, built at a cost of ₹55,000 crore, fell off just three days after inauguration. Hopefully, the concerned authorities will come across the video and take necessary action to rectify the issues.
