Mahindra has revealed the ARAI-certified fuel efficiency figures for the 5-door version of the Thar. The Mahindra Thar ROXX, launched recently, comes with two engine options: a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and a 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel. Both engines are available with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. These engines and gearboxes also do jobs on other Mahindra SUVs like the Scorpio-N, XUV 700 and the 3-door Thar. However, the states of tune differ sharply between the models.

Thar ROXX Fuel Efficiency

The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine produces 175 bhp and 380 Nm of torque. It is available in the following variants: MX1, MX3, MX5, and AX7 L. The MX1 variant comes exclusively with a manual gearbox, while the MX5 and AX7 L variants can be had with automatic transmissions as well. The Thar ROXX with the turbo-petrol engine and manual gearbox is now certified to deliver a mileage of 12.40 km/l. In comparison, the Scorpio-N Petrol manages 12.7 Kmpl.

The 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine is available in two states of tune: a 152 bhp /330 Nm version on 4×2 variants and a 173 bhp / 370 Nm version on 4×4 variants. This engine is available across variants: MX1, MX3, AX3 L, MX5, AX5 L, and AX7 L. The manual gearbox is offered with all but the AX5 L variant, while the 6-speed torque converter automatic is available with the MX3, MX5, AX5 L, and AX7 L. The Thar ROXX with the less powerful diesel engine delivers an ARAI-certified mileage of 15.20km/l. In comparison, the more powerful Scorpio-N Diesel manages 15.42 Kmpl, both in manual and automatic trims.

ARAI reports, however, do not talk about the fuel efficiency offered by the higher state of the full-blown diesel found on 4×4 variants. Considering how this engine performs in real life, we think the numbers would not be too bad.

Mahindra Thar ROXX: Pricing

The Thar ROXX 4×2 is priced between Rs 12.99 lakh and Rs 20.49 lakh (ex-showroom). Prices for the 4×4 variants are yet to be announced. We expect these to be above Rs 25 lakh (ex-showroom).

Mahindra Thar ROXX: Styling

Compared to its 3-door counterpart, priced between Rs 11.35 lakh and Rs 17.60 lakh (ex-showroom), the Thar ROXX comes with a better-looking, more practical design. Key highlights include a new grille, LED projector headlamps, re-profiled taillamps, an angular C-pillar design, and two additional doors. Higher variants ride on 19-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, while the lower and mid-spec gets 18-inch Steel wheels. The rear door handles are positioned vertically and sit on the C pillar, and there is a triangular rear quarter glass.

Mahindra Thar ROXX: Features

The Thar ROXX comes with a comfortable cabin and loads of features. It gets dual 10.25-inch screens- touchscreen and digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the segment’s largest panoramic sunroof, 9-speaker Harmann Kardon audio, 6-way powered driver’s seat, ventilated front seats, climate control, 360 camera, push-button start, and Level 2 ADAS. The SUV also comes with selectable drive and traction modes on 4×2 variants, and 4WD modes on the top-spec 4×4 variants. Passenger comfort and ride quality have taken significant leaps up on the Thar ROXX. The refinement levels have also improved.

Thar ROXX Rivals

In the Indian market, Mahindra Thar ROXX directly locks horns with the Force Gurkha 5-door and Maruti Suzuki Jimny. In comparison, the ROXX offers more powertrain choices- spread across both petrol and diesel. The Gurkha only has a 2.6L diesel engine while the Jimny is a petrol-only model. However, owing to the specification- disparities, it would be difficult to draw direct mileage comparisons between the three.

More ARAI Numbers…

ARAI recently revealed the fuel efficiency figures of other popular models like the Scorpio-N and the 3-door Thar. The Scorpio-N petrol has an ARAI mileage of 12.70 kmpl on the manual and 12.12 kmpl for the automatic. Both the diesel manual and automatic deliver 15.42 kmpl. The popular 3-door Thar has an ARAI-certified mileage of 15.20 kmpl on the diesel version, while the petrol version delivers 12.40 kmpl.
