India-Bound Kia Seltos Hybrid: Fresh Details Out

The next-generation Kia Seltos will bring more than a design refresh when it enters global production in August 2025. This update marks a major shift in Kia’s electrification plans, with the Seltos set to gain its first petrol-electric hybrid powertrain and an electric all-wheel-drive system. It will debut globally in January 2026 and the hybrid version will launch by 2027-28 and is expected to launch in India soon after.
At the heart of the Seltos Hybrid is a familiar 1.6-litre petrol engine paired with a 32 kW electric motor, similar to what powers the Kona and Niro hybrids. Together, the system delivers around 141 hp and 265 Nm of torque. But the big news is the new electric all-wheel-drive setup. Instead of a mechanical connection, it uses a separate motor at the rear to deliver traction on demand.
This setup should make the Seltos more stable on wet or broken roads, especially during monsoons. It’s also expected to be efficient, with a real-world fuel economy of about 20 km/l.
The upcoming Seltos, codenamed SP3, moves to Hyundai-Kia’s third-generation small car architecture, the same as the new Kona. Expect a wheelbase increase of roughly 30 mm and a more squared-off design, inspired by Kia’s newer SUVs. That also means more space inside, especially for luggage and rear passengers.
Testing footage from snowy Europe hints at strong winter drivability, especially with the added traction from the rear motor. Kia has chosen to keep the six-speed dual-clutch gearbox, which provides quick shifts and better efficiency than a traditional torque converter.
Acceleration is expected to be modest but adequate, with a 0–100 km/h time in the low 11-second range and a top speed near 165 km/h. Improvements in smooth electric-assisted take-off and braking feel have also been made to address earlier feedback.
Inside, the hybrid version brings a sleeker layout. A curved panoramic display stretches across the dashboard, combining two 12.3-inch screens for the infotainment and instrument cluster. The new software supports wireless updates, and higher variants should include a 360-degree camera, dual-zone climate control, and ADAS features like lane-centering assistance. By removing the mechanical driveshaft, Kia has managed to create a flatter rear floor, improving comfort for backseat passengers. The battery is expected to sit under the floor, which helps preserve boot space.
With interest in hybrid SUVs growing steadily, the Seltos Hybrid would need to strike the right balance between price and practicality. The model already performs well in its class, and a hybrid version with AWD will make it even more competitive.
Pricing is expected to start about ₹3 lakh above the current turbo-petrol Seltos, placing it between ₹19 and ₹23 lakh ex-showroom. That may be a premium, but it comes with lower running costs, state-specific green incentives, and the peace of mind that electric AWD brings to Indian roads.
Trial runs for hybrid prototypes are planned for September 2025, with series production spread across Kia’s Gwangju and Hwasung plants from August 2025 to April 2026. The global reveal is set for January 2026, followed by phased rollouts in key markets through the second quarter. In India, camouflaged test vehicles have already been spotted, hinting that localisation and tuning work is underway. The launch of the hybrid version is expected to happen by 2027-28
Kia plans to offer nine hybrid SUVs globally by 2028. The Seltos Hybrid will likely be one of its most important models, sitting between costlier hybrid crossovers like the Niro and more basic petrol options. It gives buyers a practical, fuel-saving SUV that doesn't need a plug or a complete lifestyle change.
