A next-generation Skoda Superb equipped with a diesel engine and all-wheel-drive has been spotted testing in Pune. The sighting confirms Skoda’s decision to reintroduce diesel power after dropping it during the BS6 transition in 2020. The test car appeared to be the Laurin & Klement variant, finished in metallic beige, pointing to a premium placement within the Superb line-up.

The move marks a shift in strategy for Skoda. In the premium sedan segment, many buyers continue to value the torque delivery, fuel economy, and long-distance ability of diesel engines. Adding a 4x4 system further sets this Superb apart from front-wheel-drive competitors by offering more traction and stability in varied conditions.

Fourth-Generation Updates

The spotted model belongs to the fourth-generation Superb. It shows clear design changes compared to the current version, which is sold as a CBU import. The front grille has grown larger, headlights are swept back, and the overall fascia looks more modern while retaining the Superb’s executive sedan appeal.

The bodywork now carries sharper cuts and creases, balancing visual interest with the clean look expected in this class. The rear gets redesigned LED tail lamps with updated light signatures.

According to Skoda’s specifications, the new model is 43mm longer than before. This adds cabin and luggage space. Aerodynamics have also been improved by around 10–15 percent, which should help both efficiency and stability at higher speeds.

Diesel Powertrain Options

The diesel 4x4 version is powered by a 2.0-litre turbodiesel producing 190 Bhp and 400 Nm of torque. It comes paired with a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission. This combination delivers smooth acceleration, making it well-suited for highway cruising and overtaking.

The 4x4 system is tuned for road use rather than off-roading, focusing on better grip and stability in everyday driving and poor weather conditions. Skoda will also offer a front-wheel-drive diesel variant with the same engine in a detuned state, producing 148bhp. This option will give buyers a lower entry point into diesel Superb ownership while still retaining the torque and efficiency advantages of the powertrain.

Cabin Overhaul

Inside, the fourth-gen Superb has been fully reworked. A large free-standing touchscreen infotainment unit dominates the dashboard. This reflects wider market trends and brings improved usability. A digital cockpit replaces the older analogue dials, offering multiple display options for different driving needs.

Leather upholstery, soft-touch materials, and high-quality trims reinforce the Superb’s flagship role in Skoda’s line-up. Practicality has also been improved. Luggage space now stands at 645 litres, one of the largest in the segment, while an extended wheelbase adds to rear-seat comfort. This will particularly appeal to chauffeur-driven owners who prioritise legroom.

Import to Local Assembly

Skoda plans to initially bring the diesel 4x4 Superb as a CBU. This allows the company to test demand before investing in local assembly. Once response is assessed, CKD assembly at Skoda’s Pune facility is expected. Local production would reduce costs, help competitive pricing, and make broader variant options possible.

By positioning the diesel 4x4 as a premium choice, Skoda aims to appeal to buyers looking for European sedan refinement with distinctive powertrain options. The combination of diesel torque and all-wheel-drive is unusual in this price range, which should help it stand out.

Competition Check

The Superb diesel 4x4 will enter a space dominated by petrol sedans. Rivals include the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Audi A4, though most of these now focus mainly on petrol engines. The Superb’s diesel option could attract buyers who value efficiency and torque for long-distance use.

The 4x4 system further differentiates it. While most competitors stick to front-wheel-drive, the Superb will offer extra traction and confidence, an advantage in regions with heavy rains or poor road surfaces.

4X4 Superb: Not For The First Time

This isn’t the first time Skoda has offered a 4x4 Superb. Earlier generations included V6 petrol models with all-wheel-drive, though those remained niche. The new diesel 4x4 is more in line with buyer demand today, where practicality and efficiency weigh heavily in purchase decisions.

Reintroducing diesel also fits within Volkswagen Group’s strategy of maintaining diesel availability in markets where demand continues. Sharing engines and gearboxes across brands reduces costs and allows each brand to target different segments.

If the diesel 4x4 Superb succeeds, similar powertrains could return in other models, including the upcoming Kodiaq SUV. This would allow Skoda to reinforce its presence in premium segments where diesel remains valued by a certain set of buyers.
