The Japanese automotive giant Nissan launched its flagship SUV, the X-Trail, in India at Rs 50 lakh. At the time, we here at Cartoq and many other automotive experts highlighted that the vehicle had been launched at an exorbitant price tag and it should not be priced more than Rs 34–35 lakh. However, Nissan did not listen to anyone. Now, just 9 months later, it has been noted that the X-Trail is selling at a discount of Rs 29.5 lakh, which is a discount of almost Rs 21 lakh.

Recently, the popular used car dealership Big Boy Toyz, which deals in luxury cars and supercars, has listed a brand-new Nissan X-Trail for sale. Highlighting this exact listing, an Instagram influencer by the name of Dhruv Attri has shared a reel.

In this short video, he starts by stating that nobody would have imagined that a Rs 50 lakh SUV would be selling with a discount of Rs 21 lakh. He then mentions that back in August of last year, Nissan brought 150 units of their flagship SUV X-Trail to India. However, the company is struggling to sell this SUV at its launch price of Rs 50 lakh.

Hence, it is getting a massive discount of Rs 21 lakh. He added that at the time of launch, many experts stated that this vehicle is extremely overpriced. The influencer then adds that today it will cost around Rs 33–34 lakh on-road. He concluded by asking if it's worth buying the X-Trail today or not.

Should you buy the Nissan X-Trail today?

Now, to many people, getting a Rs 50 lakh SUV with a discount of Rs 21 lakh would seem like a steal deal. However, it has to be noted that the X-Trail, despite this steep price tag, is a very polarising SUV as it lacks a lot of important things. The biggest shortcoming of the X-Trail is its powertrain. This SUV only comes equipped with a tiny 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged engine.

This motor is only capable of producing 160 bhp and 300 Nm of torque. For reference, the Toyota Fortuner, which is a direct rival, offers a much more powerful 2.8-litre diesel engine, which is capable of producing 201 bhp and 500 Nm of torque. And the performance that it offers is miles ahead of the X-Trail.

Apart from this, the X-Trail also misses out on a lot of things. Of these, another major issue is that the SUV, despite being a seven-seater vehicle with a third row, does not offer any legroom in the last row, which makes it completely unusable. The company should have kept it as a five-seater like the Skoda Kodiaq and the Volkswagen Tiguan.

Also, even after paying a premium price of Rs 34–35 lakh (on-road price after discount), you still don't get leather seats. Rather, you are offered fabric seats, which take away from the premium appeal of this SUV. It also misses out on electric adjustment and ventilation for the driver/front passenger seats.

In addition to these, the X-Trail offers a very small touchscreen infotainment screen, which today looks very outdated and is not something that a Rs 35 lakh SUV should offer. The X-Trail also misses out on ADAS, despite this vehicle being a CBU (Completely Built Unit) model.

No, in our opinion, even with such a hefty discount, buying the Nissan X-Trail does not make a whole lot of sense. However, if you want something which is unique and very limited in India, then you can give it a shot.
