Ola Is Building An Electric Car To Challenge The MG Comet

Electric two-wheeler manufacturing giant Ola Electric has been losing its market share for a while now. So, in order to boost its sales, the company has recently made a bold new announcement. During its Sankalp 2025 event, it announced that it is developing a new electric car which will be based on the brand's upcoming Gen 4 platform. In addition to a small electric city car that will rival the MG Comet EV, Ola will also use the same platform to produce an EV auto-rickshaw and a Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV).
As stated, the upcoming Ola Electric small EV car will be based on the company's upcoming Gen 4 platform. This new platform is being designed to fit the needs of multiple mobility solutions such as scooters, motorcycles, cars, auto-rickshaws, and also Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs). Ola has stated that this new platform is “built to power everything from personal to shared mobility.”
According to Ola Electric, the upcoming platform will feature an electric motor capable of producing 16 kW. It added that the new motor will be 15 percent more energy-efficient than the Gen 3 motor. As for the battery, the new vehicle will feature 4680 Bharat cells which will be manufactured in-house at Ola Electric’s Gigafactory.
The new Bharat 4680 cells of Ola Electric have a lighter structure, are more cost-efficient, and provide higher energy density due to local cell production. The company has highlighted that Ola’s cell manufacturing plant will play a key role in its journey. It will help in reducing dependence on imports, improving supply chain control, and potentially lowering vehicle prices.
Ola Electric’s new aim is to expand beyond two-wheelers because currently it is dependent on electric scooters, which are now facing a lot more competition in the market. The new electric car from Ola will take on the MG Comet EV. Meanwhile, the electric auto-rickshaw will compete with Bajaj Auto’s Gogon and other 3W electric rickshaws.
Lastly, the Light Commercial Vehicle from the company will target shared mobility and goods transport. Recently, Ola Electric also launched the S1 Pro Sport in the country, which is its most powerful and aerodynamic scooter to date. The company has also announced that a high-performance motorcycle, the Diamondhead, is also coming.
Over the last few months, Ola Electric has been losing its market share significantly. In July 2025, the company's market share dropped to 17.35 percent compared to 38.83 percent in July 2024. This marks a decrease of over 57 percent year-on-year, which is concerning for the brand.
It has also been reported that the number of units registered has also halved. This number has fallen from 41,802 units in July 2024 to 17,848 units in July 2025. Ola Electric has acknowledged this drop and has highlighted the reasons behind it. It has been reported that product delays and quality issues have dented customer trust.
Additionally, there is a limited after-sales service network and competitors are offering better financing options, reliability, and service reach. Its main rivals are legacy automakers such as TVS and Bajaj. As for the other main rival, Ather Energy poses a big threat to Ola Electric. Lastly, electric start-ups such as River and Simple Energy are also threatening Ola Electric’s market share. Source
