A month past his sad demise, the Indian government has awarded Osamu Suzuki Padma Vibhushan- the country’s second highest civilian honour ( the Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award) for his outstanding contributions to Trade and Industry. He had visionary leadership and unwavering commitment which shaped the global automotive landscape, giving Suzuki Motor Corporation a solid position and status.

This isn’t the first time that the government recognized Suzuki with an award. In 2007, his contributions to the Indian economy were recognised with the Padma Bhushan. He was the only foreign national on the list of seven awardees back then.

Osamu Suzuki helmed the automotive giant for over 40 years, and passed away on December 27, 2024, at the age of 94. During his time at the helm, Maruti Suzuki had a strong focus on small and affordable vehicles. Osamu Suzuki was also known for his conservative financial management, which proved to be of great value in the long run.

Before we go into the details of how Suzuki’s careful game plan led to the rise and growth of India’s largest car manufacturer, let’s discuss the Padma Awards in detail. They are conferred in three categories: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. These awards are given in disciplines and fields of activity like art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, and civil service.

Maruti Suzuki’s Journey In India And Osamu Suzuki

Osamu Suzuki brought ‘Suzuki Motor Corporation’ (SMC) to India. Betting big on the Indian market and its potential wasn’t an easy move back in the day. Many saw it as a bad decision. Scaling the Indian business would have been one of the most defining gambles of Osamu Suzuki’s long career.

Suzuki entered into a joint venture (JV) with the Indian government in 1982 and ‘Maruti Udyog Ltd’ was formed. India’s closed economy and nascent auto industry posed huge threats, but this did not drain Suzuki’s confidence. Next year, it launched the first-generation Maruti 800, which was also known as the SS80.

The hatchback soon became popular for being a practical, and affordable offering. Suzuki continued to be at the helm till 2021. He stepped down as chairman in 2o21, marking an end to the longest leadership tenures in automotive history. Maruti Suzuki currently enjoys big market shares in both passenger vehicles and utility vehicles segments.

The JV with Toyota also stands crucial in Maruti Suzuki’s growth and market shares in recent times. Osamu Suzuki also played a vital role in steering this partnership with Toyota Motor Corporation in the most productive direction. The association with Toyota is not limited to recent years.

History tells us that during the 1970s, Japan imposed new stricter emission norms overnight, leaving auto majors in trouble. Here, Toyota bailed out Suzuki by providing them with engines which were compliant with the new norms. Osamu Suzuki thus shared deep historical and personal ties with Toyota.

We know how the Suzuki-Toyota JV is unfolding in modern times. The same has spawned many badge-engineered cars and SUVs in the Indian market. The Baleno-Glanza, Invicto-Innova, Urban Cruiser Hyryder-Grand Vitara, and Fronx-Taisor can all be cited as examples.

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) is currently preparing to launch its first EV in India- the e-Vitara. Sooner or later, Toyota could also come up with their version of the same- the Urban Cruiser BEV. The concept of the same was on display at the Bharat Mobility Expo 2025.
