Renault is preparing a strong comeback in the Indian SUV space, with plans to bring back the iconic Duster and introduce a new three-row SUV—the Bigster—by 2026. These two models aim to combine rugged design and modern tech, while also addressing India’s growing preference for cleaner and more affordable mobility. The brand’s bet? Offering petrol, hybrid, and LPG/CNG options across the lineup to suit a wide range of buyers.

Powertrains for Every Kind of Buyer

The new Duster and Bigster will be offered with multiple engine choices, each aimed at a different type of customer—urban commuters, value-seekers, and fuel economy enthusiasts alike.

The entry point is expected to be a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol mild hybrid, delivering 130 PS with a 48V electrical system. It’s tuned for those who want strong performance with better fuel efficiency in city conditions.

Stepping up is a 1.6-litre strong hybrid, producing 140 PS by pairing a petrol engine with two electric motors and a 1.4 kWh battery. This setup should appeal to those looking to cut down on fuel bills without sacrificing driveability.

There’s also a 1.0-litre petrol-LPG bi-fuel engine, producing 100 PS, which can switch between petrol and LPG. In the Indian market, this is likely to be positioned as a CNG variant—offering a compelling option for budget-conscious users, especially in metro cities with established CNG infrastructure.

While the Duster might focus on affordability and CNG efficiency, the Bigster, with its larger proportions and more premium pitch, could lean into the hybrid variants. Both SUVs are expected to come with manual and automatic gearboxes, with the Duster retaining its legacy 4x4 capability—a nod to its original off-road appeal.

Feature-Loaded Interiors with an Eye on Comfort

Renault appears determined to match Korean and Japanese rivals when it comes to tech and creature comforts.

Expect the higher variants of both SUVs to offer a 10.1-inch infotainment system with wireless Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Arkamys-tuned 3D surround audio. The driver display will be fully digital—a 7-inch screen offering real-time data, navigation prompts, and trip insights.

Connected car features like remote vehicle diagnostics, OTA updates, and live traffic information will be part of the package. Meanwhile, the larger and more premium Bigster could also include features like a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, and advanced multi-zone climate control—helping it go head-to-head with more expensive rivals.

Safety Isn’t an Afterthought

Both models are expected to come equipped with six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) such as automatic emergency braking and lane-keep assist. However, it’s worth noting that the latest Duster received only a three-star Euro NCAP rating—a reminder that balancing safety with aggressive pricing may remain a challenge in India.

Target Pricing and Market Positioning

The Duster is likely to be priced in the ₹10–15 lakh bracket, directly taking on the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Maruti Grand Vitara. The Bigster, being a larger three-row SUV, could be priced between ₹13–18 lakh, placing it in contention with the Tata Safari, Hyundai Alcazar, and Mahindra XUV700.

Local assembly at Renault-Nissan’s Chennai plant will help keep costs in check, while an expanded dealership and service network—especially in Tier-2 and rural areas—is expected to support the relaunch. This outreach is key to overcoming past issues with after-sales support, which had eroded brand confidence.

A Stronger Global Footing Fuels Local Ambitions

Renault’s global operations are on solid ground. In 2024, the company reported revenues of €56.2 billion and an operating profit of €4.3 billion—its highest yet. This financial strength allows it to invest aggressively in growth markets like India. The Duster and Bigster are part of a broader strategy that includes five new models by 2027 and a goal of capturing 3% of India’s passenger vehicle market.

A Bold Second Innings, But Not Without Challenges

Renault’s dual-SUV strategy is ambitious. Hybrids and CNG variants fit well with India’s ongoing push for cleaner mobility solutions. The original Duster, launched in 2012, created a strong fanbase for its butch design and off-road capabilities. Renault is hoping to rekindle that enthusiasm—this time with updated powertrains, better tech, and stronger pricing.

As mid-size SUVs become the default choice for many Indian families, the return of the Duster and the launch of the Bigster could mark Renault’s most important moment in the Indian market yet.
