With an entry price of just ₹7.89 lakh (ex-showroom, India), the Kylaq is Skoda’s most affordable offering in India. It derives its name from Mount Kailash and roughly translates to Crystal in Sanskrit. This sub-4m SUV premieres Skoda’s new-age ‘ Modern Solid’ design philosophy in India. It will be showcased at the upcoming Bharat Mobility Expo. Even when it neatly tucks under the 4m mark in overall length, its wheelbase is one of the longest among rivals, standing behind the XUV 3XO alone.
Key design highlights are a slimmer grille, split headlamps, pronounced bonnet creases, and a two-tone bumper with an aluminium-look spoiler. New in the colour palette is an Olive Gold shade.
On the inside, the SUV features a two-spoke steering wheel, an 8-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10-inch touchscreen with an updated OS, wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, a wireless phone charger, powered front seats, a cooled glovebox, a rear armrest, three-point seatbelts, and a single-pane sunroof. The rear row comes with ample room and occupant comfort. The rear seat is a 60:40 split unit and the Kylaq has a class-leading 446-litre boot capacity.
Forming the base of Kylaq is Skoda-Volkswagen’s MQB A0 IN platform- with up to 95% localisation gone into it. This architecture also underpins the Kushaq and Slavia as well. Skoda’s Brezza rival relies on the familiar 1.0L TSI turbo petrol engine that generates 115hp and 178Nm. Both 6MT and 6AT transmission options will be available. Its better power-to-weight ratio compared to the Kushaq (38kg lighter) makes the Kylaq a fast car- 0-100 kph in 10.5 seconds.
The suspension is claimed to be on the softer side, to deliver a more comfortable ride. The safety kit includes six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, brake disc wiping, and ISOFIX mounts. The platform is already known for its crashworthiness.
Skoda has aggressive targets set for the Kylaq. It plans to sell 1 lakh units within the first 365 days of launch. This seems achievable considering how affordable the entry price is. The top-spec could be priced around 12 lakh.
