The MG Windsor EV has made a strong impact in India’s electric vehicle market, with an especially enthusiastic reception in South India. Sales data from February 2025 reinforces this trend, as nearly half of JSW MG Motor India's EV sales continue to come from South Indian states, following a pattern seen throughout 2024.

February 2025 Sales: South India Leads the Charge

In February 2025, MG sold 2,431 Windsor EV units across India—a 25.82% drop from January’s 3,277 units. Despite this decline, the regional distribution remained consistent, with South India continuing to dominate.

Based on historical trends, South India contributed approximately 47.2% of MG’s EV sales in 2024. Applying this proportion to February’s numbers, an estimated 1,147 Windsor EVs were sold in Karnataka, Telangana, and Kerala. This regional preference has persisted despite production constraints due to modifications at MG’s Halol facility.

Among these states, Karnataka continues to lead in EV adoption, followed closely by Telangana and Kerala. This is significant, considering South India accounts for just 22% of the country’s population but contributes nearly half of MG’s EV sales.

A Year in Review: South India's EV Dominance

A look at Windsor EV sales over the past five months highlights the widening regional gap:

Month MG Windsor EV Total Sales Estimated South India Contribution

Feb 2025 2,431 units ~1,147 units

Jan 2025 3,277 units ~1,547 units

Dec 2024 3,785 units ~1,786 units

Nov 2024 3,144 units ~1,484 units

Oct 2024 3,116 units ~1,471 units

The steady dominance of South Indian states suggests a fundamental difference in EV adoption patterns across regions. With Windsor EV production crossing the 15,000-unit milestone recently, the gap between South India and other regions appears to be growing.

What Drives South India's Preference for the MG Windsor?

Progressive EV Policies and Incentives

South Indian states have implemented some of the most forward-thinking EV policies in India. Karnataka, Telangana, and Kerala offer additional state-level incentives beyond central government schemes, including road tax exemptions, registration fee waivers, and purchase subsidies, making EV ownership more affordable.

Superior Charging Infrastructure

South India has a more extensive charging network than many other regions. Bengaluru leads the way, with charging points at nearly 60% of major commercial establishments. This infrastructure significantly reduces range anxiety, a key factor influencing EV adoption.

Suitable Urban Driving Conditions

The MG Windsor EV’s real-world efficiency—offering a combined range of 308 km per charge—aligns well with urban commuting patterns in cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Kochi. Its smooth performance and user-friendly driving experience make it a practical choice for city dwellers, even though ride quality may be affected on poorly maintained roads.

Competitive Pricing and Cost Efficiency

With prices ranging from ₹13.50 lakh to ₹15.50 lakh, the Windsor EV undercuts rivals like the Tata Nexon EV, Tata Curvv EV, and Mahindra XUV400. Additionally, MG’s innovative Battery-as-a-Service model, costing ₹3.9 per kilometre, appeals to value-conscious South Indian buyers who focus on long-term ownership costs.

Tech-Savvy Consumer Base

South India’s strong IT presence, particularly in Bengaluru and Hyderabad, has fostered a tech-savvy population that appreciates Windsor’s advanced features. The 15.6-inch infotainment system, 360-degree parking cameras, and electric tailgate add to its appeal.

Future Outlook: Scaling Up Production to Meet Demand

JSW MG Motor India is adapting to this sustained demand by expanding its Halol manufacturing facility. Plans are underway to increase production capacity from 100,000 to 300,000 units annually by 2027. While production constraints affected February’s sales, the company expects stronger numbers in the coming months.

The Windsor’s continued success in South India underscores the importance of understanding regional market differences when launching EVs in India. As demand for electric mobility grows, this regional preference offers valuable insights for automakers and policymakers looking to drive EV adoption across the country.
