After keeping people on their toes for a while, Tata Motors recently launched the Altroz premium hatchback’s facelifted iteration in India. This new model now gets an extensively redesigned exterior and interior. The company, along with the previous 1.2-litre petrol and the 1.5-litre diesel engine options, is offering this hatchback with the 1.2-litre CNG engine option as well. Recently, it has been reported that Tata Motors will soon be offering the CNG Altroz with an AMT gearbox.

At the moment, the exact launch date of the Tata Altroz CNG with the AMT gearbox has not been revealed. However, it is believed that the company will be offering it in the coming few months. This upcoming AMT CNG Altroz premium hatchback will come powered by the same 1.2-litre engine which is seen on the Tigor sub-compact sedan and Tiago hatchback.

This CNG powertrain is capable of producing 73 bhp and 95 Nm of torque. Currently, the Tigor and Tiago CNG are both offered with the AMT gearbox, so it makes a lot of sense for the company to offer this convenient gearbox option with the newly launched Altroz facelift. The company will also retain the iCNG dual-cylinder setup on the Altroz iCNG.

For those who may not be aware, the previous generation model was offered with the iCNG dual-cylinder technology developed by Tata Motors. This system was launched in the old Altroz back in 2024. The Altroz iCNG comes with safety features such as a micro-switch to keep the car switched off during refueling.

It also comes equipped with thermal incident protection, which shuts off the CNG supply to the engine and releases petrol into the environment as a safety measure. It also gets an enhanced rear body structure and a 6-point mounting system for the CNG tanks. Other highlights of the iCNG system include an industry-first advanced Single ECU and a feature that enables Direct Start in CNG mode, allowing for jerk-free shifting between petrol and CNG modes.

Why does the AMT option in Altroz CNG matter for Tata Motors?

Recently, during an interview with a media outlet, MD, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Shailesh Chandra highlighted that 25 percent of the sales of the Altroz are contributed by automatic variants. He added that for this reason, it is very important for the brand to offer the Altroz iCNG with an AMT gearbox. Also, while talking about the AMT gearbox option, Chandra added it is a very cost-effective entry gearbox for first-time buyers.

He highlighted that 70 percent of the Altroz buyers are first-time car buyers, and AMT is seen as a more affordable and accessible option compared to the dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Chandra stated, “We thought that for somebody who wants to experience automatic for the first time, AMT is a good option because it's cost-effective.”
