What Tata Motors' Senior Management Is Saying

Tata Motors has been a frontrunner in India's EV market, with models like the Nexon EV and Tigor EV gaining significant traction. The introduction of the Altroz EV aims to strengthen Tata's presence in the premium hatchback segment, offering consumers an eco-friendly alternative without compromising on style or performance.

However, the company is approaching the launch with caution. Vivek Srivatsa, Chief Commercial Officer of Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, emphasised the importance of market stability before introducing the Altroz EV. He stated to the FinancialExpress,

We want Altroz (EV) to play a specific role. We have two products where Altroz (EV) was supposed to be. We will wait for the right time when there is a proper role for Altroz in the portfolio and also for the EV category to stabilise. Price erosion has taken place much faster than anticipated in the EV segment. Hence, we don’t want to rush in and create more confusion in the category

The fact that Mr. Srivatsa hasn't refuted the possibility of the Altroz getting an electric powertrain is a positive signal. The Altroz EV was showcased way back in 2019, at that year's Geneva Motor Show. Subsequently, the electric hatchback has even been spied testing on Indian roads. With the Altroz's ALFA platform now quite mature, following a production run, of over 5 years, the time's now ripe for electrification given the acute need of cost effective electric cars in the Indian market.

In such a situation, the Tata Altroz EV is poised to be a significant addition to the premium hatchback segment, offering an electric alternative to the popular Altroz model. Based on the Agile Light Flexible Advanced (ALFA) architecture, the Altroz EV is expected to incorporate Tata's second generation Acti.EV technology, ensuring a blend of performance and efficiency.

Expected Specifications:

Battery and Range: The Altroz EV is anticipated to feature a 35 kWh lithium-ion battery, delivering an ARAI-certified range of approximately 420 km on a single charge.

Performance: Equipped with a 120 Bhp-190 N, electric motor, the vehicle is expected to offer a smooth and responsive driving experience, suitable for both city commutes and highway drives.

Design: While retaining the core design elements of the Altroz, the EV variant could feature subtle distinctions, such as blue accents and a redesigned front grille, emphasizing its electric identity.

Interior: The cabin is expected to be spacious and modern, with a floating touchscreen infotainment system, digital instrument cluster, and premium upholstery, enhancing the overall driving experience.

How It Stacks Up Against the Competition

Upon launch, the Altroz EV will compete with other electric hatchbacks in the Indian market, such as the Citroën eC3 and the MG Comet EV. With an expected price range of ₹12–15 lakh, the Altroz EV aims to offer a compelling package of range, features, and affordability.

Where Things Stand Now

While the Altroz EV is not yet confirmed for immediate launch, indications suggest Tata is keeping it ready in the wings. The platform is already in place, and previous showcases have hinted at a near-production-ready version. What remains to be seen is whether market dynamics and internal portfolio positioning will allow Tata to greenlight the car sooner rather than later.
