Tata Altroz Racer Twin Clutch Automatic Gearbox: In The Works

The country’s third-largest carmaker, Tata Motors, recently launched the all-new Altroz Racer in the country. This new, sportier iteration of Tata’s premium hatchback has been launched with a price tag of Rs 9.49 lakh. It currently comes with a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a single manual transmission option. Now, many people have questioned the brand if it will be getting an automatic transmission option or not. It has been reported that the company is planning to launch this new hatchback with an automatic transmission.
Recently, during an interview with Autocar India, Vivek Srivatsa, Chief Commercial Officer at Tata Motors, revealed exciting news. He stated that the company might introduce an automatic gearbox variant for the Altroz in the future. This revelation has most likely come because many people have demanded the brand offer the Altroz Racer with an automatic transmission option.
As per the reports, in order to suit the sporty driving characteristics, the company could be offering it with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic (DCA). Presently, this gearbox is seen in the Tata Nexon sub-compact, which is one of the most popular models currently on sale in India.
Reports have stated that this decision to initially launch the Altroz Racer with a manual transmission was driven by urgency. The company wanted to bring the model to market quickly and cost-effectively.
However, due to customer preference and demand, Tata Motors is now preparing to introduce an automatic variant to meet demand. Altroz Racer’s primary rival, the Hyundai i20 N Line, offers both manual and automatic options.
As mentioned, Tata Motors recently launched the Altroz Racer, positioning it as a direct competitor to the Hyundai i20 N Line. The Altroz Racer is offered in three trims by the company. These are R1, R2, and R3. All of them come equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission.
The Altroz Racer packs, as stated, comes equipped with a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. This motor delivers 120 bhp and 170 Nm of torque. At the moment, it only gets a 6-speed manual gearbox. Some reports claim that it can do 0-100 kmph in 11 seconds.
Tata Motors is offering the Altroz Racer in Atomic Orange, Avenue White, and Pure Grey colors. Each of these color variants features a contrasting black roof and bonnet with racing stripes. On the inside, the car boasts darker interiors with racing stripes. The main highlight of the cabin of the Tata Altroz Racer is the 10.25-inch touchscreen.
In terms of features, it comes equipped with segment-first ventilated seats, a 360-degree camera, a 7-inch instrument cluster, and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The more expensive trims, R2 and R3, come equipped with an electric sunroof, a digital instrument cluster, and connected car features as well.
The company has priced the Altroz Racer very competitively in the market. The R1 variant starts at Rs 9.49 lakh. Moving above, the R2 variant is priced at Rs 10.49 lakh, and the top-end R3 at Rs 10.99 lakh. Tata Motors has strategically priced the Altroz Racer to undercut its main rival, the Hyundai i20 N Line.
The entry-level Altroz Racer is Rs 50,000 cheaper than the base i20 N Line. Meanwhile, the top-end variant is Rs 28,000 less than the range-topping i20 N Line N8 MT. This will help Tata Motors to lure in more buyers and take away from the market share of the already established i20 N Line.
