Tata Motors showcased the Avinya concept at the Auto Expo a few years ago. It was initially considered a single model. However, we now have reports confirming that Avinya will not be a single model, and Tata has plans to expand its portfolio of premium electric cars under the Avinya brand.

Speaking to Autocar India, Chief Commercial Officer of Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, Vivek Srivatsa, said that the Avinya range of cars will be based on Tata’s Gen 3 EV architecture. It will utilize a born-electric skateboard platform. The manufacturer stated that the first model under the Avinya brand will be launched in India around late 2025.

Tata Avinya

Tata showcased the Avinya concept at the Auto Expo in 2022. The concept featured a very futuristic design that combined elements of an MPV and a hatchback. It has sleek LED headlamps and an LED DRL designed like the Tata logo that extends to meet the headlamps.

Regarding the platform, Tata has confirmed that the Avinya and other cars under this brand will be based on Jaguar Land Rover’s (JLR) Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA). With this agreement, Tata Motors will access JLR’s advanced electric drive unit, battery pack, and manufacturing expertise. Tata will pay a royalty fee to JLR, and this arrangement will be localized to ensure the final product is priced competitively. The first product under the Avinya brand is expected to be launched sometime in 2025.

Tata Avinya Brand

As mentioned above, Avinya is not just a product but a brand. Tata will be expanding its product portfolio with this new brand. We expect to see more concept models under the new brand. Avinya in Sanskrit means “Innovation.” It is currently being marketed as a premium brand, and according to reports, the entire Avinya range will sit at the higher end of Tata’s product portfolio.

Mr. Srivatsa mentioned that the Avinya range of electric cars will consist of various body styles like SUVs, MPVs, and varied sizes. At the moment, there is no clarity on whether Avinya will operate as a separate brand. Earlier, Tata announced that the electric vehicle segment would become a separate entity and set up EV-only dealerships in a couple of cities.

The Avinya range of cars from Tata will be built at Tata’s manufacturing plant in Tamil Nadu. Tata has committed an investment of ₹9,000 crores for this manufacturing facility. The plant is expected to be established at Ranipet, and there are rumors that Tata might produce Jaguar and Land Rover EVs at this plant as well.

While we know that the first product will be launched in the market, there is no clarity on other products. Tata is currently one of the leading car manufacturers in India. It has created a space for itself in the electric vehicle segment. Tata currently offers electric cars like the Tiago EV, Tigor EV, Punch EV, Nexon EV, and X-Pres T. Upcoming launches from the manufacturer include the Tata Curvv EV, as well as petrol and diesel versions. Tata also launched the most powerful version of their popular hatchback Altroz as Altroz Racer in the market.
