Top speed and performance are two things you wouldn’t often tend to associate with Tata Motors. Not any more! Those times are gone and the all-new Tata Curvv coupe has just created a milestone by surpassing a speed of 200 kph. The Curvv is available with both ICE (petrol and diesel) and EV powertrains. Now, the petrol and diesel versions have set new top speed records for the manufacturer…

Tata Curvv Top Speed Run: Details

A video posted on the Tata Motors YouTube channel shows the petrol and diesel Curvv SUVs sprinting to breathtaking speeds. The action takes place at Indore’s NATRAX testing facility. It is a world-class automotive proving ground situated in Madhya Pradesh. Over the years, we have seen multiple manufacturers take their vehicles here to demonstrate their actual abilities.

Previously, the Tata Altroz Racer used to be the manufacturer’s fastest car- with a claimed top speed of 170 kph. The ICE Curvv has three different engines on offer- a 1.2-liter turbo petrol, a 1.5-litre diesel, and a TGDi turbo-petrol. The first two come from the Nexon. In the video, we see the diesel and TGDi turbocharged petrol versions attempting the speed run. The TGDi engine is called Hyperion and the diesel has the name Kryojet.

The video begins by putting forward a loud question- ‘How fast can the Curvv go?’- which would be answered in the next few seconds of it. The indigenously developed Hyperion petrol engine produces 125 PS and 225 Nm and is essentially a direct injection version of the 1.2L, 3-cylinder engine.

This powerhouse gets a 350 bar fuel injection system, variable geometry turbocharger, sodium-cooled exhaust valves, Miller cycle combustion chamber, hydraulic cam phasing with a central oil control valve, and exhaust after-treatment with a gasoline particulate filter. The driver sets the ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) to 180 kph and the car pulls aggressively to the set speed.

Another Curvv, powered by the Kryojet diesel engine can also be seen. It is also doing the same speed- 180 kph. The Hyperion’s driver pushes his Curvv further. The vehicle speed soon climbs to 200 and further to 204 kph- all indicated. This marks a major milestone for the vehicle and the manufacturer, as the Curvv Hyperion has become the first Tata vehicle to clock over 200 kph!

The 1.5-litre diesel engine produces 116 bhp and 260 Nm. Unlike the Nexon, both these engines come with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission along with the 6-speed manual.

Curvv Pulls A Boeing 737!

The Hyperion-powered Curvv isn’t just about scaling speeds. Recently, Tata Motors demonstrated its impressive torque and towing capacity by making it tow an operational Boeing aircraft! This ‘act’ (as Tata calls it on the official video) took place at the AIESL Hangar in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. A Boeing 737 owned and operated by Air India Express was pulled using the Curvv Hyperion for 100 meters. The aircraft weighs 48,000 kilograms and this thus marks another major milestone for the manufacturer. This act was also recorded in the India Book Of Records.

Previously, the SUV had towed three dipper trucks weighing 14 tonnes each, making for a compiled weight of 42 tonnes- a touch lower than the aircraft’s 48-tonne weight.

This is not the first time that we have seen a Tata SUV pull/tow an aircraft. Years ago, a Tata Hexa had pulled off something similar by towing a Boeing 737-800. The aircraft, in that case, had an operational weight of 41,140 kg. The Hexa, however, had a 2.2-litre CRDi diesel engine which was significantly torquier with 400 Nm on tap. Also, it was underpinned by a more rugged ladder-on-frame chassis unlike the Curvv’s humble monocoque.
