Tata Curvv’s New ‘Hyperion’ Direct Injection Turbo Petrol Engine On Video

The much awaited Tata Curvv was launched in the Indian market on August 7th. However, the brand only launched the EV version with the launch of ICE version planned for September 2. Regardless, many details about the Curvv ICE were revealed in the Curvv EV launch event itself.
With the Curvv ICE, Tata Motors is going to introduce an all new Hyperion Gasoline Direct Injection Engine. This fresh engine was revealed by the brand through a YouTube video uploaded on their official channel Tata Motors Cars. Additionally, this engine was first showcased at the Auto Expo 2023 and the brand decided to name it Hyperion. Let’s, talk about this engine in depth.
The video starts with an exterior of the car which slowly fades away, highlighting the heart of the Curvv, the all new Hyperion Gasoline Direct Injection engine.
The entire block is shown beautifully and many of its key features are highlighted such as 350 bar fuel injection system with machine learning tech, electrically actuated variable geometry turbocharger, 3 way catalyst at front, integrated 4 way conversion catalyst at rear, central mounted dual variable cam timing system, friction optimized piston with steel ring carrier and sodium cooled exhaust valves.
The camera revolves around the engine while highlights the individual parts and features. The teaser also shows that the engine is super quite while delivering excellent performance. The power figures of this engine are not known yet but it will be tuned depending on the car.
This new 1.2 litre three cylinder turbo charged engine will deliver a power output of 125 PS at 5000 RPM and a torque output of 225 Nm between 1700 RPM and 3500 RPM. These power figures are about 5 PS and torque figures are 55 Nm more than the Tata Nexon.
Furthermore, it is BS6 Phase 2 and E20 Fuel compliant. Transmission options with this engine will include a 6 speed manual and a sporty 7 speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). The Hyperion engine is built using lightweight rigid aluminum for better stiffness.
Other than this engine, the Curvv will get a 1.5 litre diesel engine which is the same unit offered in the Nexon and a 1.2 litre petrol engine borrowed from the Nexon. This means that the Curvv SUV Coupe can be bought in three avatars: petrol, diesel and electric. A CNG version is also said to be in the works.
Another major change on the Curvv is the addition of a twin clutch automatic gearbox even on the diesel engine. This will give the Curvv wide appeal as the feature is literally absent on cars sold by the competition. Moreover, the twin clutch automatic gearbox is a wet clutch unit that promises to be more reliable than the dry clutch units (prone to issues0 seen on Volkswagen and Skoda cars.
As per its price range, the Curvv ICE will rival Hyundai Creta, Maruti Grand Vitara, Kia Seltos, MG Astor, and the Honda Elevate. On the other hand, the Curvv EV will challenge the Mahindra XUV400, BYD Atto 3, MG ZS EV, and the upcoming Creta EV in the segment. Even Citroen have launched their Curvv competitor: Basalt SUV Coupe at an introductory price of just Rs. 7.99 lakh. The Basalt stole the title of the most affordable SUV Coupe in the Indian market from the Curvv.
