Tata Harrier.EV's market debut has made the competition in the electric SUV segment even more fierce. Mahindra XEV 9e has already established a strong footing in the segment. However, Tata's aggressive pricing strategy could shake things up and give the Harrier.EV the entry and acceptance it deserves. The base-spec Harrier.EV stands a touch lower than the XEV Pack ONE in its price while the top-spec Empowered RWD is a whole four lakh rupees cheaper than the XEV 9e Pack THREE. In this article, let's pit the top-spec Harrier.EV against the XEV 9e Pack THREE and see who takes the lead.

The Harrier.EV is taller and wider than the XEV 9e. The Mahindra, however, is longer and has a longer wheelbase as well. It measures 4,790mm in length, 1,905mm in width, and 1,690mm in height and a wheelbase of 2,775mm. The length, width and height of the Harrier.EV are 4,607mm, 1,922mm, 1,740mm respectively. Its wheelbase stands at 2,741mm.

The XEV 9e feels the most spacious of the two. At 663 litres, its boot capacity is significantly more than the Harrier.EV's 502 litres. The Mahindra also has a deeper frunk- 150 litres, while the Harrier.EV can accommodate just 67 litres. The rear occupants get generous room inside the XEV. Inside the Harrier.EV, however, the rear row gets just the right amount of space.

On the design front, both these SUVs take extremely different approaches. The Harrier.EV has a more conventional SUV design and proportions- tall stance, boxy, upright shape, and muscular brawn. Key highlights include a blanked-out grille, aero wheels, and LED headlights with welcome and goodbye functions.

The XEV 9e, on the other hand, goes for a sportier, coupe-like styling. It gets connected LED lights, aero wheels, flush-type door handles, illuminated logos at the front and rear and more. Design is a personal choice, so some will like the Harrier’s bold style, and others may prefer the sleek XEV 9e.

Both SUVs come equipped with a long list of features. There are things like Dolby Atmos which no other vehicle in the segment offers, except for these. The top-spec Harrier.EV gets a 14.5-inch QLED touchscreen co-designed with Samsung. It is larger than the 12.3-inch infotainment screen found on the XEV 9e.

The Mahindra, however, comes with a tripl-screen setup- the third unit being designed for the entertainment of the co-driver. The Harrier.EV doesn't get this even on the top-spec.

The electric Harrier comes equipped with a 540-degree camera called the 'Transparent Mode' that displays the underlying terrain using a camera mounted on the SUV's undercarriage. Other features include a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, a powered tailgate, level 2 ADAS, digital rearview mirror, smartphone-based key fob, support for Over-the-air updates, remote parking six terrain modes.

The XEV 9e doesn't get terrain modes. It comes with just four driving modes. Both SUVs get 'Boost' modes in their top-spec variants. The feature list on the XEV 9e consists of a panoramic glass roof with integrated lights, HUD, MAIA (Mahindra Artificial Intelligence Architecture), ventilated seats, Harman Kardon audio with Dolby Atmos, 360-degree camera, Level 2+ ADAS, electrically adjustable front seats and a multi-zone climate control.

The Harrier.EV Empowered 75 is available in both Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) and All Wheel Drive (AWD) configurations. On the RWD variant, the 75 kWh battery pack is mated to a single electric motor that powers the rear axle. This battery is claimed to deliver a range of 627 km per charge. The XEV 9e Pack THREE comes with a slightly larger 79 kWh battery pack, which is claimed to return a range of 656 km.

The XEV 9e is underpinned by Mahindra's indigenously developed INGLO skateboard platform. The Harrier.EV, on the other hand, is underpinned by a converted ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) platform.

Talking of powertrain outputs, the XEV 9e produces 282 bhp and 380Nm. The Harrier.EV's single motor setup makes 238hp and 500 Nm. The Tata is certainly torquier than the Mahindra.

The AWD-equipped Harrier.EV, has an output of 316hp and 500 Nm. It uses two motors, mounted one on each axle. In addition to this, it also gets an Off-Road mode and six terrain modes- Normal, Snow/Grass, Mud-Ruts, Sand, Rock Crawl, and Custom. No variant of the XEV 9e offers AWD.

Both EVs come loaded with safety tech like seven airbags, Level 2 ADAS and more. Though both SUVs have been crash-tested by Bharat NCAP, in which they scored five-star ratings. The Harrier.EV, however, excelled by scoring 32 points out of 32 in Adult Occupant Protection.
