Tata Motors seems to have an aggressive product offensive for 2025— the Indian automotive giant plans to launch both ICE and EV offerings. More interestingly, Tata Motors will launch three large petrol SUVs this year. Currently, only smaller SUVs like Nexon and Punch get petrol engines. The larger ones like the Safari and Harrier feature 2.0L diesel engines. These will now get a new 1.5 TGDi petrol engine that Tata Motors has developed. Let’s dive into the details.

Tata Harrier Petrol

The Harrier is quite popular among Indian buyers, In 2023, Tata Motors gave the SUV a major facelift that brought fresh styling and more features to it. The SUV continued to be powered by the diesel engine, and people have since been waiting for the petrol iteration to debut. The petrol Harrier will be powered by a new 1.5-litre turbo petrol capable of producing 168 bhp and 280 Nm. We expect Tata Motors to launch this product by the end of the year.

Tata Safari Petrol

The Safari is Tata’s flagship SUV. At present, it is powered by the same 2.0L turbocharged diesel engine. It produces 168 hp and 350 Nm. The SUV will soon get the 1.5 turbo-petrol engine. The petrol will also offer the choice of manual and automatic transmissions.

Tata Sierra Petrol

Tata Motors recently showed the ICE version of the Sierra at the Bharat Mobility Expo 2025. No details of the powertrain were released back then. But we expect two engines to power the ICE Sierra- the 2.0 L diesel engine from the Safari and Harrier and the new 1.5 TGDi. The Sierra petrol and diesel would be based on the new-age ATLAS platform.

Tata Motors will also launch the EV version of the Sierra. It is, however, anticipated that the ICE form would have as much takers as the EV, as the Sierra brand stands close to most Indian hearts. The diesel engine makes for a good proposition on the Sierra. However, the 1.5 petrol would help it rise to acceptance in certain parts of the country which are lineant towards petrol vehicles. Tata motors is expected to launch the Sierra petrol later this year.

1.5L TGDi Petrol Engine: Key Highlights

Tata’s newly developed Direct Injection turbocharged petrol engine is capable of producing 170hp and 280Nm. The output here, is interesting. The turbo-petrol produces the same power figures as the mighty diesel engine but loses 70 Nm in torque. The actual performance thus, could hardly be compromised.

The 1,498 cc four-cylinder TGDi unit will come mated with both manual and automatic transmissions. This engine will first make its presence on the Sierra petrol and later be used in the petrol versions of the Harrier and Safari as well. It is anticipated that select variants of the Curvv as well.

This engine is flex-fuel compliant and future-ready. You can use E20 petrol (20 per cent ethanol blended with petrol) in this engine.

The introduction of this engine on the three popular models will make things easier for Tata Motors. These would help Tata gain more market share – especially in cities with a strong affinity for petrol vehicles. In a previous interview, Tata Motors managing director Shailesh Chandra had confirmed that the manufacturer is fully aware of the importance of a capable petrol powerplant on its larger SUVs. He said that with the right petrol engine choice, the Harrier and Safari will be able to drive more sales.
