Electric vehicles are gaining popularity among buyers in India, and we have started seeing EVs on our roads more than ever before. Sales numbers from different manufacturers have now been released online, and it looks like the manufacturer leading in terms of sales in this segment is actually Tata Motors. They recorded the highest sales in the EV segment in August 2025.

As per the reports that have surfaced online and the statement released by Tata Motors, they sold a total of 8,540 units of electric vehicles in India and abroad. Out of this, 2,314 units were exported. This means that in India alone they sold 6,226 units of EVs. This is actually a sign that customers have started showing confidence in EVs and are slowly accepting the change.

In second position, if you were expecting Mahindra, then be ready to be disappointed. In second place, we have MG Motor. They sold 4,761 units of electric vehicles in India last month. After MG, we have Mahindra in third position. They sold 3,495 units of EVs in August this year. Behind them, we have Hyundai, BYD, and Kia in fourth, fifth, and sixth positions.

Hyundai sold 584 units, BYD sold 447 units, and Kia managed to sell 441 units last month. Tata Motors launched their latest flagship electric SUV, the Harrier.ev, a couple of months ago, and we assume that this is the model that helped them achieve the top position last month.

The Tata Harrier.ev was priced aggressively, and it comes with several premium features including AWD. This helped them get a lot of bookings, and the current sales numbers that we see in the reports are likely because of the Harrier.ev deliveries.

In the coming months, we will have a clearer idea of the response to the Harrier.ev. Apart from the Harrier.ev, Tata’s Nexon EV, Punch EV, Curvv EV, Tiago EV, and Tigor EV have also contributed to these numbers. While they have many models, we feel the Harrier.ev might have contributed the most last month.

In second place, we have MG. The best-selling model for MG would have been the Windsor EV. MG has the ZS EV, Comet EV, and Windsor EV, along with the recently launched Cyberster and the MG M9 in the premium range. All these EVs were recently launched in the market, and deliveries for them have also started. This, along with steady numbers from the Windsor EV, has probably helped them achieve the second position.

Coming to Mahindra, they have the BE6 and the XEV 9E in their EV lineup. While the BE6 looks better, we feel the XEV 9E is something that customers see as a practical option. Mahindra has also started the delivery of Phase 2 of both the EVs.

For Hyundai, it is the Creta Electric that is bringing in the numbers, and for Kia, we have the Clavis EV, which was introduced months ago. BYD has a range of premium electric vehicles in their lineup.
