Nexon And Punch Massive Hits For Tata Motors With 15 Lakh Combined Sales

Tata Motors has achieved a remarkable double milestone, with the Nexon compact SUV surpassing 900,000 cumulative sales whilst its sibling Punch has crossed 600,000 units since their respective launches. Together, these models have accounted for over 1.5 million deliveries, underlining their significance to the manufacturer's passenger vehicle strategy.
The Nexon reached 910,181 units as of September 2025, a journey that began on September 21, 2017, when Tata Motors launched its first compact SUV. The milestone comes on the back of record-breaking monthly sales of 22,573 units registered in September, the highest single-month figure ever achieved by any Tata model. This performance propelled the Nexon to become the country's best-selling passenger vehicle for that month, finishing ahead of stalwarts like the Maruti Dzire and Hyundai Creta by substantial margins.
The September surge represented a 97 per cent year-on-year increase compared to 11,470 units sold in September 2024, and a 61 per cent month-on-month improvement from August's 14,004 units. This momentum has helped the Nexon claim the top SUV position in the first half of the fiscal year ending March 2026, putting it on track to reclaim the annual crown it lost to the Punch in the previous fiscal year.
The Nexon's appeal lies partly in its exceptional powertrain diversity. Buyers can choose from petrol power via a 1.2-litre Revotron turbocharged engine producing 120 horsepower, paired with five-speed manual, six-speed manual, six-speed automated manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmissions. Diesel variants employ a 1.5-litre Revotorq unit delivering 115 horsepower and 260 newton-metres, available with six-speed manual or automated manual options.
The CNG variant utilises the 1.2-litre petrol engine detuned to 100 horsepower and 170 newton-metres, mated exclusively to a six-speed manual gearbox. Electric versions offer two battery pack choices, with the larger 45-kilowatt-hour option providing an ARAI-certified range of 489 kilometres and real-world capability around 350 kilometres. This makes the Nexon one of the only nameplates spanning petrol, diesel, CNG and electric powertrains under a single badge.
The Punch, launched in October 2021, has proven even more rapid in its ascent. Reaching 626,000 units by September 2025 makes it the fastest SUV to hit the 600,000 milestone, outpacing the Hyundai Creta's 48-month journey and the Maruti Brezza's 57-month timeline. The Punch achieved its first 100,000 units by August 2022, doubled to 200,000 by May 2023, and maintained consistent momentum through subsequent milestones.
September saw the Punch register 15,891 units, representing a 16 per cent year-on-year and 48 per cent month-on-month improvement. This secured it fifth position in overall passenger vehicle rankings for the month, marking a rare occurrence of two Tata models appearing in the top five best-sellers.
The micro SUV has achieved its success through a combination of SUV-inspired styling, high ground clearance and five-star safety ratings from both Global NCAP and Bharat NCAP. Like the Nexon, it comes in multiple powertrain options including petrol, CNG and electric variants, catering to diverse buyer preferences and budgets.
Pricing for the Punch ranges from approximately six lakh rupees for the entry-level petrol variant to over ten lakh rupees for the electric version. Tata offers 33 variants across the line-up, providing options tailored to different budget brackets with features including touchscreen infotainment, dual airbags, automatic transmission and sunroof depending on the trim selected.
Demographic analysis reveals interesting patterns. Around 70 per cent of ICE and CNG Punch buyers are first-time car owners, underlining its role as an accessible entry point into the SUV segment. Approximately 25 per cent of Punch EV buyers are women, indicating broad appeal across demographics. Geographically, demand distributes fairly evenly with 24 per cent of customers from tier-one cities, 42 per cent from tier-two cities and 34 per cent from tier-three cities.
The Punch contributed approximately 36 per cent of Tata Motors' total passenger vehicle sales in the fiscal year ended March 2025, whilst commanding nearly 38 per cent market share in the sub-compact SUV segment. The Nexon, meanwhile, has been instrumental in establishing Tata's presence in the compact SUV category, competing against established rivals from Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Kia and Mahindra.
Both models benefited from the revised GST structure implemented in late September, which reduced tax burdens on vehicles across categories. The timing coincided with the onset of the festive season, traditionally the strongest sales period in the calendar. Tata Motors reported its highest-ever monthly passenger vehicle sales of 60,907 units in September, with these two SUVs accounting for over 64 per cent of that total.
The combined quarterly performance for July through September 2025 showed the Nexon and Punch together achieving 86,782 units in domestic sales, representing robust growth in the compact SUV segment. Tata's broader passenger vehicle business recorded 144,397 units in the quarter, marking a ten per cent year-on-year increase.
Electric variants of both models have contributed significantly to Tata's dominance in the battery-powered passenger vehicle segment. The company sold 24,855 electric vehicles in the second quarter of the fiscal year, representing 17 per cent of total passenger vehicle sales. However, its market share in the electric passenger vehicle category fell to 40 per cent from 64 per cent the previous year, as competitors including JSW MG Motor and Mahindra increased their presence.
