India’s First Turbo CNG SUV To Get Manual And Automatic Gearboxes

Tata Motors is set to introduce the eagerly awaited CNG variant of the Nexon, which was first unveiled as a concept at the Bharat Mobility Show in January. After the launch of Curvv ICE on September 2, Nexon CNG will be the next big launch from the manufacturer. It will be India’s first car with a turbo-petrol CNG powertrain, reflecting Tata’s innovative advancements in the CNG space, particularly with the advanced dual-cylinder technology.
Tata Nexon iCNG will offer two distinct gearbox options, catering to varying consumer preferences. The concept showcased at the Bharat Mobility Show featured a 5-speed manual transmission, but reports indicate that an Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) variant will also be available, making it appealing to a broader audience.
In terms of design, the Nexon CNG will largely resemble its petrol and diesel counterparts, with the same stylish exterior, interior, and comprehensive list of features. However, to accommodate the added weight of the CNG system, mechanical adjustments—particularly in the suspension—will be made. The Nexon CNG will also sport unique iCNG badges, distinguishing it within the lineup.
Tata Nexon iCNG will be powered by the same 1.2-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder engine found in the petrol variants, delivering 118bhp and 170Nm in pure petrol mode. However, when operating on CNG, the power and torque outputs will be slightly reduced due to the nature of the fuel. This marks a significant milestone as Tata Motors becomes the first manufacturer to offer CNG on a turbocharged petrol engine, whereas other CNG models typically feature naturally aspirated engines.
The addition of the AMT gearbox to the iCNG version makes it Tata’s third CNG-AMT model, following the Tigor and Tiago. It will also feature Tata’s innovative twin-cylinder CNG technology, which optimizes storage by splitting the CNG tank into two smaller cylinders. This setup allows for a practical boot capacity of 230 litres, enhancing usability without compromising on space.
The twin-cylinder system in the Nexon iCNG positions two 60-litre (water equivalent) cylinders parallel to each other, discreetly integrated and hidden in the vehicle. This configuration not only maximizes cargo space but also provides room for tool kits and an underbody spare wheel.
The factory-installed CNG system incorporates several advanced safety and performance features, including a micro switch, a six-point cylinder mounting system, a single ECU unit, and high-quality materials to ensure durability and safety. Tata Motors has already introduced this technology in the likes of the Tiago, Tigor and Punch iCNG models.
The Tata Nexon CNG will be strategically positioned to compete with popular models like the Maruti Suzuki Brezza CNG. Upon its launch, Tata Motors will have a comprehensive range of powertrain options offered across the Nexon range- petrol, diesel, CNG, and electric. Apart from the Brezza, the Nexon will be the only other automatic CNG powered compact SUV money can buy in India.
This diversity is expected to drive significant sales growth for the model. Tata’s current CNG portfolio in India includes the Tiago, Tigor, Altroz, and Punch iCNG models.
Upon launch, the Tata Nexon CNG is expected to be priced at a premium of up to Rs. 80,000 over the regular variants, considering its enhanced features and the advanced powertrain.
