tata nexon ev buyers opting curvv ev dealers explain

The Nexon EV is one of Tata Motors’ best-selling models in India. It also bears the title of being India’s most preferred electric vehicle. However, it has lately been facing strong headwinds. These are not just from other manufacturers and their all-electric products alone. The recently launched Tata Curvv EV seems to be eating into the Nexon EV sales in many cities.

Many Tata dealerships from across the country report potential Nexon EV buyers shifting (rather ‘upgrading’) to the Curvv.EV, despite the higher pricing- a transition that experts had already predicted. What’s new is the pace at which this is happening. Experts say the shift is happening a lot quicker than what most predictions had suggested.

According to ACI, dealers say that a large share of customers who have booked the Nexon EV or are on the lookout for one, wish to upgrade to the Curvv.EV.

Reason #1: Price Overlap

The higher variants of Nexon EV are priced close to the Curvv.EV. The top-spec Nexon EV Empowered + LR (with the 40.5 kWh battery pack) is priced on par with the mid-spec Curvv.EV Accomplished 55 variant. The Accomplished 45 variant of the Curvv.EV is even more affordable.

Nexon EV’s Empowered + LR variant has an ex-showroom price of Rs 19.29 lakh. The on-road price goes slightly above Rs 20 lakh. The Curvv.EV accomplished 55 is priced at Rs 19.25 lakh, ex-showroom. The Accomplished 45 variant is even more affordable at 18.49 lakh (ex-showroom).

Reason #2: Bigger battery

For an EV buyer, it makes sense to go for the mid-spec Curvv.EV Accomplished variants, as even the smaller ‘Accomplished 45’ comes with a 45 kWh battery as opposed to the Nexon EV’s 40 kWh unit. The Accomplished 55 variant is even better with a larger 55 kWh battery. Even the smaller battery pack on the Curvv EV is claimed to offer 500+ km in range, while the 55 guise has a claimed range of 585 km. These are significantly better than anything the Nexon can deliver.

Reason #3: More Features

Even in terms of features, the difference between a mid-spec Curvv.EV and a top-spec Nexon EV is forgivable for the value-seeking buyer. The Curvv.EV Accomplished, however, does not get ventilated seats, cooled front seats, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, front parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, a sunroof, and a few other knick-knacks. The top-spec Nexon EV, on the other hand, gets these. However, most buyers would be ok with this trade-off due to the powertrain advantage and extra range of the electric coupe.

Nexon.EV now selling at significant discounts

Alarmed by the dropping sales, Tata Motors has announced attractive discounts on the Nexon EV Empowered + LR. The EV is now available with discounts of up to Rs 1.5 lakh in most cities. This will bring the on-road price to Rs 19 lakh. This will give the Nexon EV better value proposition, and infuse sense in buying it over the Curvv.EV.

The Most Popular Tata Curvv.EV Variant…

The hottest selling variant of Tata Curvv.EV isn’t the mid-spec. It is the top-spec Curvv Empowered + that is in the highest demand among buyers. Most dealers report that majority of Curvv EV bookings are for this variant.

Currently, the range-topping Curvv.EV variant has an ex-showroom price of 21.99 lakh. Due to its high popularity, the top-spec variant also commands a high waiting period, which currently spans 8 weeks (2 months). Deliveries have already started.

Customer deliveries of the Tata Curvv.EV begin later today. Tata Motors will launch the Curvv SUV Coupe’s internal combustion engined variants on the 3rd of September 2024.
