Tata Nexon is the best-selling SUV from the Indian car manufacturer. In the last seven years, Tata has sold over 700,000 units of the Nexon in the market. It is currently the only SUV in the market to be offered in petrol, diesel, and EV formats. The SUV has been missing the CNG option for a very long time. The manufacturer showcased the iCNG version of the Nexon earlier this year at the Bharat Mobility Expo, and it looks like Tata will be launching the Nexon iCNG in the market soon. According to reports, Tata is expected to launch the SUV in September this year.

The Tata Nexon iCNG is going to be a special SUV when it gets launched. Why? It would be the first CNG SUV in the country to get a turbocharged petrol engine. As mentioned above, the SUV was showcased to the media earlier this year, and we know what the SUV will look like.

Starting with the exterior design, it remains the same as the recently launched facelifted version. It gets a connecting LED bar at the front that joins the dual-function LED DRLs, the split headlamp setup, alloy wheels, and tail lamps—everything remains the same. What makes this different is the new CNG setup in the boot. Tata has now introduced their twin-cylinder system in the Nexon as well.

This way, customers can have the best of both worlds. As this is a turbo petrol engine, customers can enjoy the driving experience without worrying about fuel efficiency as it runs on CNG. Tata Motors has included the same twin-cylinder setup in the Nexon where the boot space of the car is not compromised.

They have placed two CNG gas cylinders instead of one large one in the boot. The two cylinders are neatly installed on the floor of the boot and covered by a carpet. There is a possibility that Tata might only offer a tire puncture kit with the Nexon iCNG. If not, then the spare wheel will be placed under the floor of the car. This way, the spare wheel won’t take any space inside the boot.

Other than this, there are minor cosmetic changes in the car to indicate that this is the iCNG variant and not the regular petrol or diesel version. The engine on this Nexon iCNG remains the same as the regular petrol version.

It is powered by a 1.2-liter, three-cylinder, turbocharged unit that generates 120 PS and 190 Nm of peak torque. With the addition of the CNG cylinder and other components, Tata would have made some changes to the suspension and engine tune to make it more fuel efficient compared to the regular petrol version.

The engine is available with both 5-speed manual and automatic transmission options with the petrol version. However, when it comes to the iCNG variant, we are not sure about the automatic transmission.

Tata does offer iCNG AMT with the Tiago and Tigor. If they manage to implement the same formula here with the Nexon, customers might actually appreciate it. Tata is expected to price the SUV competitively. The Nexon iCNG is expected to be priced Rs 50,000 to 80,000 more than the regular petrol variants.
