The sub-4 metre SUV segment saw a major shift in August 2025 as the Tata Nexon overtook the Maruti Suzuki Brezza to claim the top spot. This is a significant change in a category where the Brezza has traditionally been strong and Maruti has enjoyed consistent dominance.

Nexon Moves Ahead

The Nexon sold 14,004 units in August, up 9.19 percent from July’s 12,825 units. In comparison, the Brezza fell from 14,065 units in July to 13,620 units in August, a decline of 3.16 percent. The difference between the two models was just 384 units, showing how closely contested this segment remains.

Tata has been steadily updating the Nexon with more features and stronger safety packages. The model also benefits from having both petrol and electric versions, with the Nexon EV adding meaningful numbers to the overall total. Recent interior and equipment updates appear to have worked in its favour, helping it pull ahead of the Brezza for the month.

Brezza Slips Slightly

Maruti continues to have the advantage of its widespread dealer network and brand strength. However, the Brezza’s August performance shows that even popular models can face dips when competition is intense.

Factors like production adjustments, dealer stock planning, or buyers holding back in anticipation of updates are possible reasons for the Brezza's sales dip. Maruti’s focus on efficiency and steady pricing keeps the Brezza relevant, but the competition has cut into its lead.

How Others Performed

The Hyundai Venue stayed in third place with 8,109 units, up marginally by 0.68 percent. The Kia Sonet followed in fourth place with 7,741 units, a growth of 1.49 percent over July. Both models show steady demand backed by feature-rich packages and reliable service networks.

The Mahindra XUV 3XO, a recent launch, dropped sharply to 5,521 units from 7,238 in July, a fall of 23.72 percent. Supply chain or production issues could be factors here. The Skoda Kylaq was sixth with 3,099 units, down 8.23 percent from July’s 3,377 units. While still a new entrant, its volumes remain lower compared with Korean and Japanese rivals.

The sub-compact SUV space has become the most competitive part of India’s passenger vehicle market. Features such as sunroofs, connected car tech, advanced safety, and good fuel efficiency are now standard expectations. Buyers are increasingly looking for value-packed vehicles rather than basic transport.

What the Shift Means

The Nexon’s win over the Brezza is not just about one month’s sales. It shows that Tata has positioned itself strongly in a segment once seen as Maruti’s stronghold. With its mix of petrol, diesel, and electric versions, the Nexon appeals to a wider range of buyers.

The Brezza remains a formidable rival, but the August numbers highlight that leadership in this segment remains open to more than one serious contender - you might remember that it Fronx that topped the charts earlier this year!
