Tata Motors has confirmed that the much-anticipated Sierra EV will arrive in showrooms by the 2025 festive season. This official confirmation, shared during investor briefings and dealer presentations, marks a crucial step in bringing back one of India’s most iconic SUV nameplates. The electric version will be launched first, with petrol and diesel variants set to follow in early 2026.

This announcement not only confirms the revival of a brand steeped in nostalgia, but also signals Tata’s evolving premium strategy. The Sierra EV will be the first among seven new nameplates planned for release by the end of the decade, underscoring its importance in Tata’s long-term roadmap.

Old Name, New Direction

The original Tata Sierra, remembered for its distinctive three-door layout and large glasshouse, holds a special place in India’s automotive memory. While safety norms and modern design needs make an exact replica impossible, Tata has preserved the SUV’s iconic silhouette. The wraparound rear windows, upright stance, and angular lines are intended to evoke the original, while meeting contemporary standards.

Recent spy shots from cold-weather testing in Leh show a vehicle that appears close to final production form. The use of minimal camouflage suggests that design and engineering validation are nearing completion. The focus of this phase of testing is to fine-tune thermal management and drivetrain performance in challenging conditions, both vital for a long-range electric SUV.

The new Sierra will be built on Tata’s Acti.EV platform, allowing for both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations. While official battery capacity figures haven’t been released, estimates suggest a pack larger than 60kWh, with a real-world range of over 500 kilometres. This would place the Sierra EV firmly in the premium midsize SUV space.

High-Tech Interior And Loaded Equipment List

Inside, the Sierra EV will debut Tata’s most advanced cabin layout to date. Spy images reveal a full-width triple-screen dashboard, a first for any passenger vehicle from the brand. This setup includes a digital driver display, central infotainment unit, and a passenger-side screen. Additional highlights include a four-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated Tata logo, further underscoring the model’s premium aspirations.

Feature-wise, the SUV is expected to offer ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof, and an advanced Level 2 ADAS suite. The Sierra EV also aims to deliver a premium seating experience. Two layouts are in the works: a conventional five-seat version and a four-seat lounge configuration with individual rear seats, aimed at luxury buyers.

Tata has faced criticism in the past for offering solid mechanical packages with underwhelming equipment levels. The Sierra EV appears designed to correct that impression, with a focus on delivering a competitive feature set from the outset.

The powertrain lineup will include both single and dual motor options. The dual-motor setup will enable all-wheel drive, giving the Sierra a genuine edge in capability over many of its front-wheel-drive electric rivals. This approach honours the Sierra's original "go-anywhere" image while serving modern expectations for performance and versatility.

What It Might Cost

The Sierra EV’s target market includes buyers who value distinctive styling, premium technology, and zero-emissions performance. Given its coupe-SUV design and relatively rare format in the Indian EV market, the Sierra could enjoy a temporary edge as a segment pioneer. Tata’s marketing strategy appears to centre around this first-mover advantage.

Pricing is expected to start at around Rs 18 lakh ex-showroom. That would position it below the Harrier EV. The pricing strategy aims to attract premium urban buyers who want a uniquely styled electric SUV.

Interestingly, Tata is not restricting the Sierra to an electric-only offering. The model will also be launched with 1.5-litre turbo-petrol and 2.0-litre diesel engine options. These internal combustion variants will broaden appeal, especially in regions with limited charging infrastructure. This dual-pronged strategy allows Tata to test both conventional and future-facing demand under one brand umbrella.

Production-readiness appears high. The pre-launch test mules have a finish close to what one would expect on showroom cars, suggesting tooling and assembly lines are ready. This should help Tata avoid launch delays and ramp up production quickly once bookings begin.

Looking Beyond Launch

Engineering efforts for the Sierra have focused not only on powertrain options and premium interiors but also on off-road readiness. Videos from testing runs show the vehicle tackling rough roads with confidence, hinting at generous ground clearance and capable suspension tuning. These traits are important to SUV buyers seeking adventure-ready vehicles.

Tata is leveraging its experience with EV production, gained from the Nexon EV and Harrier EV, to smoothen the Sierra's path to market. However, the Sierra EV’s more premium positioning may require upgraded service support at dealerships, especially for the ADAS features and high-voltage components.

With the festive season just months away, attention will now turn to final specs, booking announcements, and most importantly; whether Tata’s blend of heritage and modernity is enough to bring the Sierra name roaring back to life. Watch this space!
