A camouflaged Tata Sierra prototype has been spotted testing in Mumbai, confirming that the iconic SUV is set to return in a new avatar. The model keeps the original’s upright silhouette but adds modern styling and technology to target today’s SUV buyers. It was shown at the 2025 Auto Expo in near-production form and the final version is likely to stay true to this design.

Heritage Design With Modern Touches

The Sierra’s shape recalls the 1990s original with its squared stance and wraparound glass, while connected LED headlamps, sharp tail lamps, and a floating roof effect bring it in line with Tata’s latest design language. The prototype suggests Tata wants the Sierra to stand out as a lifestyle SUV rather than a conventional midsize model.

Tech-Laden Cabin With Triple Screens

Spy shots reveal a cabin dominated by a triple-screen setup across the dashboard - a first for Tata. It includes a digital driver display, large infotainment screen, and a passenger-side display. Premium upholstery, Type-C charging points, and rear AC vents point to a much more upmarket positioning than Tata’s current midsize SUVs.

EV First, ICE To Follow

Unlike most launches, Tata will introduce the Sierra EV before petrol and diesel versions. The EV is expected around October 2025 with 60 kWh and 75 kWh battery options offering 450-550 km range.

A dual-motor AWD setup may be offered on the top variant. Most features that we first saw in the Harrier.EV, including the transparent camera for off roading, and the Summon mode are likely to make it to the Sierra.EV.

Petrol and diesel models should follow in early 2026, priced lower to take on top trims of the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.

The Sierra.EV is expected to sit below the Harrier.EV in terms of price and positioning. It will be Tata Motors' answer to the likes of the Mahindra BE6, Creta.EV and for that matter even the Vinfast VF6.

The electric SUV segment in the 15-25 lakh rupee category is really heating up, and buyers will soon have a bevy of options to choose from.

Market Impact of a Revival

The Sierra is likely to start at Rs 20 lakh for the EV and around Rs 15 lakh for the ICE versions. It will be built in Tata’s Pune plant on the Acti.EV platform with heavy localisation of batteries and motors.

With midsize SUVs selling over 40,000 units a month, the Sierra’s mix of nostalgia, new tech, and multiple seating options could help Tata tap into both old fans and younger buyers looking for something different.

There are a lot of Indians who have grown up seeing the Sierra be the rugged, go-anywhere SUV in the 1990s. Some of that nostalgia is expected to translate into sales, especially in the first few months.
