Tata Wants To Shock Mahindra With Avinya EV's Pricing

Tata Motors showcased the Avinya X concept at the Bharat Mobility Expo 2025. The first Avinya EV is expected to arrive sometime in the coming years. Not much is known about the specifications or other details of these. However, a recent report by Moneycontrol says that Tata Motors could shock Mahindra with the pricing of the first Avinya EV. An insider reportedly told the publication that the EV could have a price tag of around 25 lakh when launched. This information is said to come from sources directly aware of the product plans.
The first Avinya model will be a five-seater SUV designed by Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited (TPEML). Tata Motors debuted the Avinya in April 2022 and later we came to know that this would be a family of electric vehicles rather than an individual model. The range is also known to debut Tata's "Gen 3 architecture."
A Tata Motors spokesperson stated: ” We have indicated that the first vehicle under the Avinya series is expected in FY27. We’ve not indicated anything on the pricing of the vehicle. We typically talk about it at the launch.”
The source further added that the homegrown carmaker, also India's largest passenger EV manufacturer, plans to position the Avinya as a direct rival to the upcoming Tesla Model 3.
Tesla is planning to enter India in the coming months. The Model 3 is projected to have a price in the range of 30-32 lakh (ex-showroom). It would be the most affordable Tesla to be sold in India. Rumours suggest that Elon Musk's EV company could start commencing deliveries as early as April. Unlike the extremely localised Tata EVs, Teslas will be brought in as complete imports.
The Indian government is working towards implementing tax relaxations and policy amendments for Tesla's smooth entry into the domestic market.
Tata Motors, with its strong EV manufacturing experience and widespread supply chain, will be able to bring about a competitive edge in price for the Avinya. This suggests the possibility of a 25-ish lakh price for the first model. Such a price would leave Mahindra stunned. The BE 6 and XEV 9e are perfectly priced products and the Avinya’s projected price could unsettle the pricing edge of the XEV 9e in particular. The XEV 9e is currently priced between 21.90 and 30.50 lakh, ex-showroom.
Based on Tata's Gen-3 EV architecture, the Avinya series will feature high structural safety along with advanced waterproofing and dust protection (particularly useful considering it is a born-electric platform). The battery will support ultra-fast charging and a range of over 500km is to be expected. Several models are said to be in plans, under the Avinya brand.
Sources aware of the matter hint at a possibility of Tata Motors planning to merge the current step-down subsidiary- the Electric Vehicle (EV) business with the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) Vehicles vertical in the time ahead. These will then both fall under the larger Passenger Vehicles (PV) vertical, which would, further be separated from the Commercial Vehicles (CV) vertical.
The EV market in India is rapidly growing. We have set ambitious targets for EV adoption. The country aims to have 30% of private cars, 70% of commercial vehicles, 40% of buses, and 80% of two-wheelers and three-wheelers make their transitions to electric by 2030. This would mean that Indian roads have over 80 million EVs by the end of the decade.
