Tesla Officially Makes Debut In India With Model Y: Starts At Rs 59.89 Lakh

Finally, after years of delay, the American electric vehicle manufacturing giant Tesla Inc. has entered India. The first-ever Tesla showroom, which the company calls the Experience Centre, has been opened in Mumbai. Along with the launch of the Tesla Experience Centre, the company has also launched its first-ever vehicle for the Indian market, and it is the Model Y. It starts at Rs 59.89 lakh and will be offered in rear-wheel drive and long-range rear-wheel drive variants.

Tesla Experience Centre launched

The first Tesla Experience Centre in India has been opened in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai. It was inaugurated in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. It is a massive 24,566 sq. ft. experience centre, which is now open to the public. The company is currently hiring for sales and service teams in Mumbai and Delhi.

Pricing

First off, let's start with the pricing of the newly launched Tesla Model Y. As mentioned, the company has launched two variants of the Model Y in India. The first is the Rear-Wheel Drive variant, priced at Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom). As for the on-road price in Mumbai, it is Rs 61.07 lakh.

The other and more expensive variant is the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive variant. The LR RWD is priced at Rs 67.89 lakh (ex-showroom), and its on-road price in Mumbai is Rs 69.15 lakh. Tesla has stated that the booking amount is Rs 22,000 (Today - 15th July), which is non-refundable.

Following which, within a week, a Rs 3 lakh payment has to be made. As for the deliveries, they will commence from Q3 of this year. Currently, the Model Y is available for sale in Delhi, Gurugram, and Mumbai.

Powertrain options

The Tesla Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive variant will come equipped with a single electric motor making 299 PS of power and 420 Nm of torque. As for the battery pack, it will be getting a 60.5 kWh battery pack offering a claimed range of 500 km on a single full charge. It will be able to perform a sprint of 0–100 kmph in just 5.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 201 kmph.

As for the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive variant, it will also be offered with a single electric motor. However, it will be making 340 PS of power and 450 Nm of torque. What makes it more expensive is the bigger 75 kWh battery pack, which offers a claimed range of 622 km.

The LR RWD variant’s 0–100 kmph sprint happens in just 5.6 seconds, and it will also reach a top speed of 201 kmph. Internationally, the company also sells an AWD variant as well. However, that is not coming to India.

Design and dimensions

The Tesla Model Y, which has been launched in India, is the recently facelifted model. It features slimmer LED headlights, connected LED taillights, and a very clean and classy coupe-like silhouette. As for dimensions, the Tesla Model Y measures 4,797 mm in length, 1,982 mm in width, and its height is 1,624 mm. Its ground clearance is 167 mm.

The company is offering the Model Y with 19-inch Crossflow Wheels as standard. As for the paint options, the standard color is the Stealth Grey. The rest of the colors are optional extras, with Pearl White Multi-Coat being priced at Rs 95,000, Diamond Black at Rs 95,000, Glacier Blue at Rs 1.25 lakh, Quicksilver at Rs 1.85 lakh, and lastly, Ultra Red at Rs 1.85 lakh.

The Model Y boasts a very sleek and minimalistic cabin, and it is being offered with two interior color options, including black and white. The white interior is priced at Rs 95,000 extra. Other notable highlights of the Model Y’s cabin include a panoramic glass roof, a 15.4-inch central touchscreen, and an 8-inch display for rear passengers.

In addition to these, the company is also offering the Model Y with wireless charging, premium audio, and HEPA filtration. It will also get Over-The-Air updates and advanced safety and camera systems. Tesla is also offering the Model Y with Full Self-Driving (FSD) in India, and this option is priced at Rs 6 lakh. Now, how that will work in Indian traffic conditions is yet to be seen.
