Tesla Model Y: Book From Anywhere In India, Tesla Will Have Electric Car Delivered To You

Elon Musk-owned Tesla recently made headlines by announcing its India-entry with the Model Y. With an ex-showroom price of Rs 67.89 lakh, it definitely sits on the expensive side of things. Like it does in other international markets, Tesla follows a direct-to-customer model in India as well. A week after its first experience centre opened in Mumbai, Tesla India has made a major announcement. People from across India can now make reservations for the Model Y. The company has further revealed that four cities would qualify for priority deliveries.
Previously, bookings were available in select cities like Mumbai, Pune, Delhi etc. Now, the carmaker's website lists almost all Indian states. Buyers can choose from the list and make their reservations. The website also mentions that the bookings made from Mumbai, Pune, Gurugram, and Delhi will be prioritised for deliveries.
If you are looking to buy a Model Y, use the manufacturer's official website to configure your car, make the payment and get the vehicle delivered to your doorstep. Facilities like the one in Mumbai can be used to experience the brand and its products.
Before you enter the configurator, you'll have to select your location. The list now includes all the states and union territories (34 options in total). When you select your preferred choice from this, you'll be taken to the configurator.
On the Tesla Model Y, even the colour options come with a price. The palette (for the exterior) consists of six shades- Stealth Grey, Pearl White Multi-Coat, Diamond Black, Glacier Blue, Quicksilver, and Ultra Red. All of these except the Stealth Grey are chargeable! The most expensive colour (Quicksilver or Ultra Red) could set you back by Rs 1.85 lakh! The standard car gets an all-Black cabin. Opting for a more pleasant White interior will cost Rs 95,000.
Tesla has also brought a 'Full Self Driving (FSD) Suite' to India. Available as an optional extra, this costs Rs 6 lakh. At present, this isn't as comprehensive as the 'Tesla Autopilot' sold abroad. It is, however, expected that the carmaker would add more features to this suite as it gets the required regulatory approvals from the authorities. The present legislation clearly mandates the presence of a human driver with a valid driving license in the driver's seat.
The website lists the selected spec's on-road price in the preferred state/union territories. At present, different states charge different state-level taxes, and registration costs on electric vehicles. Some go easy on them, while others levy huge sums. This brings sizeable differences in the price that the end customer gets to pay for his/her Model Y.
Let's explain this with an example. Consider the case of the cheapest Model Y RWD. It has an ex-showroom price of Rs 59.89 lakh. We haven't opted for any payable add-ons. The vehicle has the Stealth Grey colourway and Black interior. The FSD is off the list as well.
The on-road cost in Delhi would amount to Rs 61.07 lakh. The same spec has an on-road price of Rs 64.42 lakh in states like Kerala and 67.33 lakh in Karnataka. Clearly, the difference isn't negligible. If you're wondering, in states like Karnataka, a fully specced Model Y can cost Rs 86.06 lakh (on-road)!
Once you have finalised your spec, confirm the booking by paying a sum of Rs 22,220. This amount is non-refundable. In the seven days that follow, another 3 lakh needs to be paid. Then, you can close the deal by paying the rest of the amount. To make it easier for Indian buyers, Tesla has even made UPI payments available.
