Mahindra Thar ROXX vs 3-Door Thar In A Classic Drag Race: Which SUV Will Win? [Video]

Mahindra currently has two iterations of the Thar on sale in India- the three-door and the recently launched Thar Roxx. Deliveries of the Roxx are yet to begin. Adding to the hype, various media houses and YouTube channels have been creating engaging content with the Roxx. A recent video by ‘Power On Wheel’ shows the Thar Roxx engaging in a drag race with the 3-door Thar.
In the video, Mahindra Thar 4×4 is pitted against the new Thar Roxx. While the Roxx might seem like an extended version of the Thar, Mahindra has put substantial efforts into making it unique. It boasts re-tuned engines, a new platform, and other mechanical upgrades.
At the start of the video, the host drove the Thar Roxx, while his companion was behind the wheel of the 3-door Thar. Both vehicles took off the line at the honk of three and the Roxx soon took the lead and maintained it till the end. The first win for the 5-door.
In the second round, the drivers switched their vehicles. Despite the Thar 4×4 getting a brief head start this time, the Thar Roxx quickly overtook and stayed ahead, winning once again. The race finally declared Thar Roxx as the winner.
Both the Thar 4×4 and Roxx are powered by the same 2.2-litre mHawk turbo diesel engine paired with automatic transmissions. However, the Roxx has this in a higher state of tune, producing 152 PS and 330 Nm of torque, compared to the regular Thar’s 132 PS and 300 Nm.
This higher power output gave the Roxx a performance advantage, despite the heavier weight brought about by its larger size. The added power and torque likely played key roles in its victory. Additionally, the Thar 3-door was equipped with off-road tyres instead of stock ones, which may have impacted the performance as well.
While drag races like this are entertaining to watch, they have little practical significance in everyday driving. As the video host pointed out, people don’t typically drive like this in real-world scenarios. Engaging in such races with personal vehicles can pose safety risks and potentially harm the car. It’s best to enjoy these events online and avoid replicating them on public roads.
The 5-door Mahindra Thar Roxx shares its engine lineup with the 3-door model but benefits from a better state of tune. There are two engine options available: a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol mStallion and a 2.2-litre diesel mHawk.
The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine comes in three different states of tune, with the highest output being 174 bhp and 380 Nm. The 2.2-litre diesel engine generates a peak power of 172 bhp and up to 370 Nm of torque. Both engines are available with the choice of a 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission.
The diesel engine on the 3-door Thar produces 132 hp and 300 Nm. The petrol, on the other hand, produces 150 hp and 320 Nm.
The Roxx is offered in both rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and four-wheel-drive (4WD) variants, with the latter being available only with diesel engines. The 3-door Thar, on the other hand, gets 4WD on both petrol and diesel variants.
