Toyota Fortuner GR Sport With 550 Nm Revealed: Most Powerful Fortuner Ever

The cult-like following that the Toyota Fortuner has in India is unparalleled. In a similar manner, the Fortuner is also very popular in other Southeast Asian and South African countries. Most recently, Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) launched the most powerful iteration of the Fortuner. It is the updated version of the Fortuner GR-Sport. This particular model now boasts more power, including 550 Nm of torque, and a few other cosmetic upgrades as well.
A video from South Africa, where this new and most powerful version of the Fortuner was unveiled, has been shared on Facebook by Rumbidzai Nyazungu on the page. In this short clip, we can see the Toyota Fortuner GR-S coming onto the stage. It was then parked on the turntable, which then shows this new SUV from all angles.
For the year 2025, Toyota, for the South African market, has given the Fortuner GR-S a more powerful tune for its engine. It still comes equipped with the same 2.8-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine. However, instead of making 201 bhp, it now makes 221 bhp—an increase of 20 bhp. The torque has also gone up from 500 Nm to 550 Nm.
All the power will be sent to all four wheels, and a torque converter automatic gearbox will handle the transmission duties. Apart from this major update, the new 2025 Fortuner GR-S gets a lot of exterior design upgrades as well. These include a set of new 18-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels finished in gloss black. It also comes with a new front and rear lower bumper.
Apart from these, Toyota has also given this new SUV a GR-tuned suspension with monotube shock absorbers. Additionally, this iteration of the Fortuner also gets GR exterior badges, Alcantara GR-badged seats, GR aluminum pedals, and GR interior badges.
At the moment, Toyota offers the Fortuner GR-S in India. However, whether this new 2025 model with more power will be launched in India or not has not been confirmed. The Fortuner GR-S sold in India is currently priced at Rs 51.94 lakh, making it the most expensive Fortuner on sale in India.
Whether the updated GR-S Fortuner is coming to India or not is uncertain. However, there are reports that mention Toyota is planning to launch a hybrid Fortuner in India. This particular model will get the same 2.8-litre diesel engine, but it will be assisted by a 48V mild hybrid system.
It is believed that this model could see a slight bump in power figures along with a slight improvement in mileage. Apart from this model, Toyota is also working on the development of the seven-seater version of its strong hybrid SUV, the Urban Cruiser Hyryder. It will be launched this year after the launch of Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara’s seven-seater model.
When it comes to premium ladder-on-frame chassis SUVs in India, the Fortuner is unrivaled. Its closest competitor was the Ford Endeavour, but that was discontinued as the company exited India. Apart from this, the MG Gloster and the Skoda Kodiaq are some of its rivals. However, the Fortuner outshines each of those SUVs.
