Toyota, the Japanese automaker known for its rock solid engines is planning to launch three new cars in the Indian market within the next two years. All of these new launches will be an SUV considering the ever growing demand for SUVs in India. Additionally, Toyota will also be launching their first ever electric car in the country under their partnership with Maruti Suzuki. Now, let’s discuss in detail what can we expect from the brand.

Urban Electric SUV

The first ever all electric car by the brand will be the badge engineered version of the Maruti Suzuki eVX which was showcased in the Japan Mobility show in Tokyo. The expected launch date for this SUV is somewhere in the second half of 2025.

Now, let’s talk about the specifications. As per the leaks, this SUV will be named as Urban Electric SUV and in a single charge it can drive up to 550 kilometers. The Urban Electric SUV will be based on the 27PL skateboard platform made by Toyota and Maruti together.

Reports also suggest that this SUV may be offered with two battery pack options which are 48 kWh and a bigger 60 kWh. The main goal of Toyota behind this SUV is to expand their portfolio which will target a wide range of audience interested in electric, ICE and hybrid vehicles.

Fortuner Hybrid

The legendary Toyota Fortuner may also see an update in the coming month. However, this is not a generation change or a facelift. The MHEV Fortuner is currently being sold in international markets such as South Africa.

This version of the Fortuner comes with a 48V mild hybrid system which improves the overall performance and fuel efficiency of the SUV. This system controls the SUV mainly during acceleration and slow speeds.

Additionally, this version pollutes less as compared to the regular Fortuner. The engine option in the MHEV Fortuner is the same 2.8 litre diesel but we may see some slight change in power figures due to the addition of a battery and motor. The hybrid powertrain will be limited to the diesel version, and the petrol Fortuner will continue to use the 2.7 liter naturally aspirated engine.

Apart from the new powertrain, the Fortuner Mild Hybrid may get additional features to make it more competitive in the Indian market.

7-seater Hyryder

To compete with the Hyundai Alcazar, MG Hector Plus, Mahindra XUV 700 and Tata Safari, Toyota will be launching a 7-seater version of their highly popular compact SUV, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. Similar to the Hyryder, this SUV will be based on the 7-seater version of the Grand Vitara.

Along with the addition of two seats, we can expect some cosmetic changes to accommodate the increased length. A disappointing part about this SUV is that the engine option and the power figures will be the same as the 5-seater version. Some additional features are also expected to set this SUV apart from the regular Hyryder.

While Toyota offers an all wheel drive layout with the Hyryder’s 5 seat variants, it remains to be seen if this feature is carried over to the longer version.
