Maruti Ertiga-Based Toyota Rumion MPV Gets A BIG Safety Boost

Toyota Kirloskar Motor has made six airbags standard across all variants of the Rumion multi-purpose vehicle. The seven-seater now offers dual front, side, and curtain airbags, replacing the earlier variant-based differences.
All Rumion trims now provide equal protection against front, side, and overhead impacts. Earlier, base versions had fewer airbags while higher grades came with full coverage. The update removes this gap and ensures the same level of occupant protection across the range.
In addition, the top V grade now comes with a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). The feature warns drivers of unsafe tyre pressures, reducing the risk of blowouts or instability when the vehicle is fully loaded.
Notably, the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga got these safety updates a few months ago, and the Rumion - which is a badge-engineered version of the Ertiga, has finally followed suit. Maruti Suzuki produces the Rumion alongside the Ertiga and ships it to Toyota dealerships across the country.
Toyota has retained the Rumion’s existing safety systems. Vehicle Stability Control helps maintain control during sudden steering inputs, Hill Hold Assist prevents rollback on slopes, and the Anti-lock Braking System with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution balances braking across wheels.
Brake Assist applies maximum stopping force during emergencies, even if the driver does not fully press the pedal. ISOFIX mounts for child seats remain standard, adding to family-focused safety.
The Rumion’s equipment list is unaffected by the safety update. It continues with projector headlamps, LED tail lamps, a chrome grille, and dual-tone alloy wheels. Inside, it offers dual-tone upholstery, flexible seating for seven, rear AC vents for second and third rows, and luggage space for long trips.
On the tech side, Toyota i-Connect allows smartwatch pairing, remote functions, and safety alerts. The 17.78 cm Smartplay Cast infotainment system supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Steering-mounted controls and an Arkamys audio system complete the package.
The Rumion shares its platform with the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, which received a three-star Global NCAP rating in 2019. While both vehicles have similar structures, Toyota’s decision to standardise six airbags gives the Rumion an advantage on safety equipment. Buyers do not have to choose higher trims to access the same level of protection.
In the MPV market, safety is now a key factor alongside space, mileage, and price. The Rumion’s uniform safety package sets it apart from rivals that still vary equipment by trim. For families evaluating seven-seater options, knowing that every Rumion variant offers the same protection simplifies the buying decision.
The Rumion is seen a more premium version of the Maruti Ertiga simply because it sports the Toyota badge on the bonnet. Sales and after sales experience is decidedly more premium though, as Toyota is a more upmarket brand than Maruti Suzuki.
