The wait is over. Vietnamese carmaker Vinfast has finally launched its first two products in the Indian market- the VF6 and VF7 electric SUVs. These have entered two different segments. The VF6 competes with the Hyundai Creta Electric, while the VF7 battles the Harrier.EV and XEV 9e. The VF6 comes in 3 variants- Earth, Wind and Wind Infinity. The larger EV comes in five different trims- Earth, Wind, Wind Infinity, Sky and Sky Infinity. The VF6 is priced in the range of Rs 16.49 lakh- Rs18.29 lakh. The VF7 starts at Rs 20.89 lakh, ex-showroom and goes upto Rs 25.49 lakh for the range-topping variant. A 10 year/200,000 Km warranty is standard on both cars.

Vinfast manufactures these at its manufacturing facility in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. This has helped in pricing these competitively. The manufacturer is already accepting orders for these electric SUVs. Interested buyers can book them by paying a token amount of Rs 21,000.

Vinfast VF6: A Closer Look At It

The VF6 is a compact electric SUV and the smaller of the two products. The electric SUV comes with a good-looking design. Like the VF7, the VF6 was also designed by Italy’s Torino Design. It comes with six colour options and has a well-equipped cabin. Wheelbase stands at an impressive 2,730 mm while ground clearance is an ample 190 mm.

The feature list includes a 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ADAS, head-up display (HUD), air purifier, and 360° camera. The safety suite consists of the likes of ABS, EBD, and seven airbags. Fast charging from 10 % to 70 % is achieved in 25 minutes.

The VF6 comes with a 59.6 kWh battery pack and a front-axle mounted electric motor that makes 201 Bhp-310 Nm, and promises a quick 8.9 second acceleration sprint. This is, in fact, the highest power output in the segment. For perspective, the Hyundai Creta Electric has 170 Bhp on offer. Lower trims of the VF6 get a motor rated for 175 Bhp-250 Nm. The ARAI certified range is 468 Kms per charge for the Earth trim while the Wind trim gets a certified range of 463 Kms.

VF7 In India: Details

The VF7 is significantly larger than the VF6 and belongs to a higher segment. It has become the Vietnamese carmaker’s flagship product for now. It too comes in six colour options and interestingly, gets the same palette as the smaller Vinfast.

The cabin design is clutter-free and practical. Its feature list is shared with the smaller SUV and has a strong focus on ensuring occupant comfort and safety.

The VF7 has both 2 wheel drive (2WD) and All wheel drive (AWD) variants in India. The Earth trim gets the 175 Bhp-250 Nm motor, and a 52.6 kWh battery, both shared with the VF6. The Wind trim gets a 201 Bhp-310 Nm electric motor, and a larger 70.8 kWh motor, and acceleration is rated at 9.5 seconds for the 0-100 Kph sprint. The Sky variant is the AWD version, and has two motors, one on each axle, making a combined output of 350 hp and 500 Nm. The VF7 Sky trims can do the 0-100 kph sprint in just 5.8 seconds. Battery on the Sky trims remains the 70.8 kWh unit.

The All Wheel Drive version has a claimed range of 510 Kms per charge. The Front Wheel Drive version, on the other hand, has ranges of 438 Kms (52.6 kWh Earth trim) and 532 Kms (70.8 kWh Wind trim) per charge respectively.

Vinfast’s India Plans

Vinfast has interesting plans for the Indian market. It is eyeing aggressive expansion here, and plans to establish 32 dealerships across 27 cities in the initial phase. These will include cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Pune. These will be prioritised in setting up outlets. Retailer and after-sales facilities will also open in Tier-2 cities like Jaipur, Ahmedabad, and Bhubaneswar.

In the upcoming years, Vin Group, the parent company of Vinfast, could bring more of its ecosystem to India. It is in fact, a huge conglomerate with strong presence in multiple sectors in Vietnam. These include real estate, retail, transport, and technology. In the future, some of these could be brougt to the Indian shores as well.
