Volkswagen seems to have plans to introduce a seven-seater SUV in the Indian market soon- the Tayron. Spy shots of it being tested had surfaced recently. We now have an update on the safety levels offered by this SUV. India-bound Tayron has scored a full five-star rating in Euro NCAP crash tests.

Euro NCAP tested the R-Line variant of the Tayron, powered by the 2.0L TDI diesel engine. It scored 87 per cent in Adult Occupant safety and 85 per cent in Child Occupant safety. The Vulnerable Road Users score (pedestrian and cyclist protection) was 83 per cent while the Safety Assist score ( assesses the efficiency of the car's driver assist systems) was 80 per cent.

The test unit was a left-hand-drive vehicle. The results, however, apply to all Tayrons. The tested SUV comes equipped with safety equipment such as multiple airbags, ISOFIX mounts, seatbelt reminders, Hill Start Assist, and more.

Volkswagen has given it driver assistance systems and technology in plenty. The Tayron comes equipped with the following: Autonomous Emergency Braking (Front Assist) with Pedestrian and Cyclist Monitoring, Lane keeping system Lane Assist, Dynamic Road Sign Display, Predictive speed limiter, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) “stop & go”, Lane change system Side Assist, Oncoming vehicle braking when turning and swerve support, Driver Attention Monitor and Driver Alert System, Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, Front Cross Traffic Assist and Exit warning system.

The crash test results also sheds light on the safety and stability offered by the passenger compartment, in various impact tests. In the frontal offset test, effective protection was offered to the knees and femurs of both dummies seated at the front. Comparable level of protection was offered to occupants of different sizes and seated in different positions. Going by the deceleration of the impact trolley and an examination of the deformable barrier post-test, it was concluded that the Tayron would pose a significant risk in a frontal collision.

An interesting feature inside the Tayron is an indirect 'child presence detection' system. It alerts the driver when a child or an infant is left in the vehicle. As per Euro NCAP's revised guidelines, no points for indirect systems though...

Protection offered to all critical body parts of the driver was deemed satisfatory in the full-width rigid barrier test, and that for the rear passenger was rated 'adequate'.

In the side barrier test, the vehicle provided great protection to all vital areas of the body. The Tayron scored the maximum points in this. The protection for chest was marginal in side pole impact test. The control of excursion was found to be sufficient. For the uninformed, this is the degree to which a body is displaced to the opposite side in the event of a collision.

Euro NCAP found that the airbags functioned flawlessly in crashes. The front seats and head restraints showed good protection against whiplash injuries in rear collisions. The doors and windows also remained operable during vehicle submersion.

You can also switch off the front passenger airbag on the Tayron. It is thus possible to safely mount a rearward-facing child restraint at the front.

In the case of pedestrian and cyclist protection, the head of the affected dummies enjoyed 'good or adequate' protection. The safety offered for the pelvis, femur, knee and tibia fetched the Tayron maximum points.

The Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) on the Tayron detects and responds to pedestrians and cyclists, in addition to other vehicles. It, however, failed to detect individuals positioned behind the vehicle, in the tests conducted by Euro NCAP.
