Volkswagen’s India lineup currently tops out with the Tiguan R-Line SUV. The Tiguan All-Space three-row SUV is no longer on sale. The carmaker may soon bring in the Tayron as a replacement. The SUV is actively undergoing road trials in India, hinting at a 2025 launch. Several spy pictures had surfaced earlier. A new video shared online shows it driving through the roads in Kerala, without any camouflage.

The New Video

The new clip has been captured from Kerala’s Alappuzha. In it, we see two Volkswagen Tayrons- finished in Blue and Black shades- rolling through a single-lane road. The Black SUV overtakes the Blue one and starts to drive in front of it. The video shows the sheer road presence of the Tayron, and gives more details of its design.

The road here is narrow, and the Tayron dominates it with its shape and proportions. It almost fills the lane! Both SUVs have ‘MH’ trade certificate (TC) plates. Interestingly, the vehicle in previous spy shots had a different paint.

In the new video, we get to see the Tayron’s rear design in detail. It has LED taillights, connected by a full-width light bar. The number plate is positioned on the tailgate, and the rear bumper has a prominent mesh pattern trim that runs along its width and a reflector strip. These highlight the vehicle’s width and overall road presence. A diffuser-like element can also be seen on the bumper.

The rest of its design leans towards that of the Tiguan R-Line. Its key highlights include sleek LED headlamps, a Black grille cover, a mesh-pattern air dam, and 19-inch wheels. The Tayron is 231mm longer than the Tiguan. The extra stretch is meant to accommodate the third row.

Interior Design And Features

The new video doesn’t show any details of the Tayron’s interior design or features. The cabin design will likely draw heavily from that of the Tiguan R-Line. It will have a modern yet practical layout. The cabin will, however, be more spacious than that of the Tiguan. Expected features on the SUV include a massive 15-inch infotainment touchscreen, 10.25-inch digital cluster, a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, three-zone climate control, wireless charging, and Level 2 ADAS.

The third row offers ample space and comfort. Even with all seats up, the Tayron will offer 345 litres of boot space. If you fold it down, the capacity jumps to 850 litres. This is, in fact, a good 200L more than the Tiguan’s boot space.

The SUV will also come with a comprehensive line of safety features and also has a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating.

Expected Powertain Specifications

Under its hood, the VW Tayron will house a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol (EA888) engine. It will produce 204hp and 320Nm, and come paired with a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission. The SUV will also have an All Wheel Drive (AWD) layout. Underpinning the Tayron will be Volkswagen Group’s trusted MQB platform. We expect the SUV to excel with its dynamics as well.

The Road Ahead

The big question is whether Volkswagen will price it right. The Tiguan R-Line has struggled here, not because of what it offers, but because of its steep CBU price tag. If Volkswagen takes the CKD route for the Tayron and assembles it at its Aurangabad facility, pricing could finally make sense.

Think of it as Volkswagen’s answer to the Skoda Kodiaq. The Skoda SUV has carved out a loyal niche in the D-segment, regularly selling in three-digit numbers. The other options- the Jeep Meridian and Toyota Fortuner- are either too niche or too expensive. This leaves a gap for a refined, tech-laden, three-row SUV that doesn’t stretch too far on price- a perfect opportunity for the Tayron.
