Volkswagen Tera Spied Testing Without Camouflage

Volkswagen has officially commenced testing of its upcoming sub-four-metre SUV, the Tera, which was confirmed in 2024. Recent spy shots reveal the vehicle without any camouflage, providing a clear view of its design elements. The Tera is set to compete in the Indian market against models like the Skoda Kylaq, Maruti Brezza, Mahindra XUV300, Tata Nexon, Renault Kiger, Nissan Magnite, Hyundai Venue, and Kia Sonet. Its debut is anticipated later this year.

The Skoda Kylaq is already a hit, and early indications are that its likely to sell more than its big brother Skoda kushaq. Volkswagen India will be hoping that the Tera can do the same for them!

All We Know So Far

The undisguised images of the Volkswagen Tera showcase a modern and robust design. The front fascia features a single-slat grille flanked by sweptback headlamps, complemented by a pronounced bumper. The side profile reveals blacked-out alloy wheels, B-pillars, A-pillar-mounted ORVMs (Outside Rear-View Mirrors), black roof rails, and plastic cladding on the wheel arches, enhancing its sporty appeal. At the rear, the Tera is equipped with wraparound taillights connected by an LED light bar on the tailgate, an integrated spoiler, rear wiper and washer, a number plate holder positioned on the rear bumper, and a faux skid plate.

While interior details remain under wraps, expectations are high for a feature-rich cabin. Anticipated amenities include:

• Ventilated front seats

• A large touchscreen infotainment system

• Rear AC vents

• Six airbags

• Ambient lighting

• Paddle shifters

• A fully digital instrument console

• Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity

Under the hood, the Tera is expected to house a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder, TSI petrol engine, delivering approximately 114 bhp and 178 Nm of torque. Transmission options are likely to include a six-speed manual and a torque converter automatic unit.

Likely Price and Launch Timelines

The Volkswagen Tera is projected to enter the Indian market with an estimated price range between ₹9.00 lakh and ₹15.00 lakh. Given the current testing phase and industry trends, the official launch is anticipated in early 2026.

Who Will It Compete With—How Will It Differ from Skoda Kylaq

While both the Volkswagen Tera and Skoda Kylaq share the MQB A0 IN platform and similar engine configurations, the Tera is expected to offer distinct styling cues aligned with Volkswagen's design language. Additionally, Volkswagen may position the Tera slightly above the Kylaq in terms of pricing, reflecting its brand strategy. Unique interior features and possibly a GT variant with a more powerful 1.5-litre TSI engine could further differentiate the Tera from its Skoda counterpart.

Given the response to Kylaq, the introduction of the Volkswagen Tera could be significant. Its modern design, anticipated feature-rich interior, and competitive performance specifications position it as a strong contender in the market. The potential inclusion of a GT variant with enhanced performance capabilities could appeal to driving enthusiasts, further broadening its appeal. However, without strong differentiation, it could also end-up cannibalising Kylaq.
