The old Baleno has to be on the wishlist for everyone who’s looking for an inexpensive but fun-to-drive car that is also high on comfort and fuel mileage. With a 94 BHP 1.6-litre naturally aspirated motor under its hood, the Baleno doesn’t have the magical figure of 100 BHP. However, out on a road, this car can surely give even many new sedans a run for their money. With a really tall gearing, the car is very quick to 100 kmph (it can do speedo-indicated 100 kmph in second cog!). Spares are relatively easy to source but are expensive. Look for a BSIII variant in VXi trim.

The original Josh Machine, the Ford Ikon 1.6 is for those looking for a thrilling experience but without spending a lot. We recommend looking for ‘1.6 NXT’ models, which came with the company’s ROCAM engine. While not too powerful, the engine is sufficiently peppy and loves to be revved. The biggest plus point is the amazing steering, which makes it one of the sharpest in the corners. Just a word of caution, stay away from high mileage cars. Some spares are expensive and a bit hard to come by.

Maruti Zen 1.0 MPFi
We all love the jelly-bean Zen, don’t we? While the Zen offers just about 50 bhp from its 1.0-litre petrol engine, this car is a hoot to drive. The car is really low-slung and the combination of a direct steering and a rev-happy motor makes it a really fun li’l car. Spares are easily available and cheap. You can find one for much less than Rs 2 lakh. Look for BSIII models.
Fiat Palio 1.6
The Palio 1.6 became the first hatchback in India to come with a 100 Bhp motor. It also won hearts with its solid build quality and decent ride-and-handling balance. Easily available for much less than Rs 2 lakh, the Palio 1.6 is a lot of fun for the money. However, keep in mind that it’s a Fiat – spares are often hard to get and are expensive.
