Of late, sedans have faced tough competition from SUVs—both compact and mid size. On the new car market, sedans and mid size SUVs fall in the same price range—Rs. 10 lakh to Rs. 15 lakh. Is that reflected in the used car prices too? Or the fact that sedans are out of favour has led to relative newer sedans being available on the cheap? Or the fact that SUVs sell many times more than sedans tilt the scale in their favour? How do options stack up if you hit the market with a budget of Rs. 8 lakh? Which category offers more bang for the buck?

To answer that question, you first need to find a way to identify best deals in both categories. And used car website don’t help much—they give you lots of filters but no way to compare cars across models, variants, age, usage.

2. You can target much less used but petrol / manual mid size SUVs.

In summary:

If you are looking for newer car, then mid size SUVs have better deals—just don’t expect higher versions in your budget. If you want a feature-packed, or automatic or a diesel, then sedans are your best bet—they would come with a few more kilometres on the odo but they still have plenty of years left in them. Just get a good mechanic to run through before signing the cheque.
